Châteauneuf-du-Pape White Rhone Blend 2024

Zach D
9.4

Pours a golden yellow with some viscosity. Aromas of bruised yellow apple, pear, apple tart, honeysuckle, chamomile, vanilla. On the palate, it is fresh and vibrant for a southern Rhône white. There is a mouth coating texture, with flavors of ripe orchard fruits, mango, pineapple, crème brûlée. There is good restraint here at 13.5 abv, and good acidity. I think that it is pretty harmonious now and would drink within 1-3 years, however the acidity might allow longer aging. Good stuff. — 4 months ago

Veyder-Malberg

Weitenberg Grüner Veltliner 2017

Ethereal (circa 1510): of the highest regions of the atmosphere; (from 1590s) an extended sense of light or air. In a boxing match, this featherweight Veyder-Malberg will light you up. In the mountains, it’s the stone you sick and the air you breathe at the solitude of 11,000 feet. — 6 years ago

Scholium Project

Pergamos Dick Vanderkous Solitude Vineyard Merlot Sangiovese 2014

Abe Schoener of Scholium Project is planning an urban winery in LA and gave a tour of the location he is trying to secure in an industrial area along the concrete banks of the Los Angeles River. Fittingly, the area was a vineyard in the 1800’s. Will be a couple of years before this comes to fruition, but an interesting plan. This wine was consumed from Solo Cup, so the score may not be fair. A Merlot Sangiovese blend on the riper end of the spectrum, but the tannins have softened since the last time I had this. — 9 years ago

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Last bottle of this (of 4). It’s turned into a solid Pessac and in my view it’s close to peaking (though admittedly I tend to favor wines on the younger side than many Bordeaux enthusiasts). It’s for that vaguely-vegetal tobacco-y / cigar box note I like, as well as some nice ripe fruit and some metallic minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied on the palate (surprisingly for an ‘18), and quite dry, but with a lot of cling in the finish. Nice tannins (soft) and decent acids. — 4 months ago

1972 Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 1972

Uh, 1972? I opened this alongside a 78 Solitude CdP. This does not taste like aged CdP, and it has 14.5% ABV...This must have been topped up with younger wine. On the nose: modern CdP with a hint of age; coffee garrigue, dried raspberry. On the palate: ok acidity, soft green, coffee, and attenuated tannin on the finish. — 5 years ago

Too young to be a ‘72. Would have liked to see how it developed day 2.
