Eric Solomon, Bixente Oçafrain and Philippe Cambie collaborate in the creation of Black Slate La Vilella Alta by selecting Garnacha and Carinyena grown on both licorella and clay limestone soils. A blend of old and young-vine fruit and with a small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, La Vilella Alta is a dense and intensively flavored wine that is fermented in tank and aged in French oak barrels of which 30% are new.

Wine with roasted whole chicken part 2: I used to adore Ribera Sacra, & then moved away with the inevitable rise in price & trend towards more modern styles. Not this. A short decant (45-60) to take the wind out of the Brett sails, & we were off: dense, brambly black fruits on nose & palate, with a distant barn door left open on the nose. Medium plus acidity. It’s the length though that impressed me, along with a freshness (at 13%). Evolves in glass, as if the fruit still has layers. Like a really good chinon. At about 28$, a high end QPR. I shouldn't be surprised at the bang-for-the-buck here as it's an Eric Solomon wine. 70% Monastrell, 15% Cab, and 15% Garnacha. Big and lush while still having a backbone--firm tannins on the finish. No decant. Just under room temp. Heck of a wine for $8. — 9 years ago

A friend who worked at Eric Solomon Imports gave me this wine many years ago and told me it need a bit of bottle age. Well, I forgot about it, so it got plenty of bottle age. After 18 years in the cellar, I thought it would be well past it’s prime, but it was still alive and vibrant. A bit of iron, some leather, and a surprising amount of red fruit. — 7 years ago

Freshness and acidic tension, but also enough echoes of tropical fruit to satisfy a more classic Cali-chard lover. Golden hue. Mid palate kinda murky-does better More chilled-but at about 10$ & change, still a contender for numero uno value in whites (I might have to give that title to Pepiere s muscadet). Beautiful blend of the best of Languedoc whites. 42% Roussanne, 40% Grenache Blanc, 15% Clairette & 5% Viognier. Estate bottled from grapes apparently grown on the 32 hectares of historic vineyards where multiple Roman legions were stationed to protect the vineyards of this region… for god reason. An Eric Solomon selection so it has been selected by someone with the ability to source great wines! Wonderful floral components with light minerality and mildly acid combined with a slight taste of residual sweetness from the fruit forward grapes typical@of the region to give this refreshing wine a perfect balance! — 2 years ago

Full flavoured, berry blend, mediums bodied, vanilla edges and citrus overtones. Smooth, and perfectly aged.
Pepper shows itself after some airtime.

Another great wine from Eric Solomon. I bought it specifically for his name as I tend to love everything in his portfolio. Didn't disappoint. A bit hot at first, due to the high alcohol content, but really softened up. Nicely balanced, good QPR. — 9 years ago

Zehe pick Tasting notes: The Sabon family ages this Reserve bottling in large barrels known as foudres. With flavors of black pepper, coffee, strawberry, raspberry, fresh herbs and a grainy palate, this is an old school Côtes du Rhône.
