Sandlands

Contra Costa County Mataro 2020

Popped and poured; consumed over two days. No formal notes. The 2020 Mataro pours a deep garnet/purple with a nearly opaque core and some staining of the tears. Predominately dark fruited with some pepper, and minerals. The wine is dry with very good structure. Tart and so fresh at this stage! I’m going to give my remaining bottles a bit more time. — 16 days ago

Sfursat Valtellina Nebbiolo 1973

Huge fun, raisinated nebbiolo aromas of candied blueberries and…uncooked ribeye (?). Great length and years ahead. Chestnut or slavonian oak gave fascinating fine-boned tannic structure. — 17 days ago

Furore Bianco Fiorduva Costa d'Amalfi White Blend

Lot of lemon curd and almond (from the falanghina) and good salinity (from the biancolella). Really acidic and mineral wine - def not for everyone. Long finish with an almost zesty finish. — 18 days ago

Bedrock Wine Co.

Evangelho Vineyard Carignan 2020

Bedrock’s first effort at making a vineyard specific Carignan from their Evangelho site was a big success in my book. Milky purple in the glass, it opens musty and dusty for a young wine with a great balance of richness and acidity. A touch of minerality too. A great food wine — felt a bit like a Barbera to me overall. Sadly this isn’t planned as an every year wine from Bedrock, just when the barrel samples warrant it and aren’t headed for the field blends Bedrock is known for — 19 days ago

Areio e Vento e Amor Evangelho Vineyard Red Blend 2018

Grown up Hawaiian Punch in fruit profile and drinkability, but also a fine wine. Silky and aromatic (those sandy sandy soils!) A red you can have with fish according to my mother. — 20 days ago

Oakley Road Vineyard Mataro 2015

Rescuing my baby home from a recent work trip with this delicious new find. Heavier than your Pinot but lighter than a blend. Juicy, fruit forward with a wonderful Cali breeze to the nose…kinda like how my baby hits me with her Luciousness. Definitely a repeat and option for the home staple. — 4 days ago

Typical #nebbiolo - dried cherry, dried rose petals on nose, classic acidity, medium body, longish finish. — 19 days ago
