Ixsir

El Ixsir Syrah Blend 2015

Forgot to photo-quite an intriguing, fresh Syrah blend from Lebanon, like a second cousin once removed from Northern Rhone. Needs air to calm down a bit, not quite pop & pour. Punchy red fruits, medium acidity, it made for good company to Middle Eastern fare with the locals (&family) at Neni restaurant, in Amsterdam. — 13 hours ago

Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012

The namesake of my brother, this was my first sampling of the Ryan Vineyard. It was outstanding! Through August, this is easily in my top 3 bottles so far this year! — 12 days ago

Henschke

Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz 2005

2nd best wine. I called it Amarone and was shocked at what it was as I’ve had it a few times before. On the sweeter side with massive depth. Big wine with lovely texture. Medium plus finish. — a month ago

Wendouree

Shiraz Mataro 2011

From the disappointing wet 2011 vintage in South Australia where many producers did not produce a wine, but, typically with old vine fruit from Wendouree, this showed well. Quite ripe considering the vintage, yet medium weight palate - liquorice and spice notes with excellent intensity. Those old vines cover a multitude of sins like a cold wet vintage. 11 years is rather young for a Wendouree but given the vintage this was very polished. Has enough guts to have another 5+ years in the cellar. — 13 days ago

Ochota Barrels

The Green Room Grenache 2021

I haven't eaten a smoked plum, but if I did I think this wine is what it might taste like if it was sprinkled with a few herbs and some pepper. And guess what, I liked it!! — 9 days ago

Wendouree

Shiraz 1996

Initial impressions - Earthy, Herbal, Soy. Cherry complex and long. Much intestinal fortitude ie. guts. Thankfully not overly menthol/eucalyptus (just a trace) as you often get with all Wendouree Cuvées. Amazing the intensity provided by those old vines going back to the 1890’s. Could easily last another 5 to 10 years but pretty much at its peak right now. This is as good as Australian Shiraz gets - up there with Grange and Hill of Grace and recognised as such by Langtons. With time in the decanter, like all great wines, they develop and change. I was getting raspberry and mineral after a few hours. An exceptional wine and in the top 5 or so wines I have had this year. In good vintages I don’t think Wendouree Shiraz should be approached at under 20 years of age. — a month ago

@Bob McDonald a bit jealous to start off, but i remind myself i still have a few mix bottles from the Wendouree hidden somewhere in a cave😁😁..there's no map for the cave🤣🤣
Still 96 shiraz what a wine🙏🙏🍷🍷
Cheers
Ps personally nowadays Hill of Grace and Wendouree are a touch above Grange, but i know you might disagree🧐

I guess the only comment about those iconic Shiraz would be that H of G and Wendouree are single vineyards and more subject to the vagaries of a bad vintage on their plot whereas Grange is multi regional and therefore more consistent year to year.

Perhaps you are right, but i will always prefer the style of Wendouree and HofG, but i guess that is very personal..though Grange would be a very close second😁

Shaw and Smith

Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2012

This developed positively from previous tastings here on Delectable. My brief notes - Liquorice; more savoury than fruit driven - Bacon, Charcuterie, spicy notes on the nose and medium weight palate. Some pepper. Very Northern Rhone in style. Certainly built for the long haul. I have 2 left - next in 2024. — 13 days ago

Mount Richmond Yamhill - Carlton Pinot Noir 2016

👀 Gorgeous translucent dark ruby in the
middle transcending to pink then a clear
rim.
👃 Roses, tea,,dark cherry, plum, raspberry
anise, potting soil, and baking spices.
👅 Smooth, fleshy, earth, tea, cherry,
plums, violets, raspberry and spice.
🕰 Allow time to air. Realistically it needs
more years to develop.

The Hess Collection

Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A pretty good find at the grocery store while on vaca. Very ripe fruit-plum, blackberry, black cherry. Quite oaky as well. Solid backbone though. Tannins still pronounced but still strong enough to balance the fruit. Drink now. Enjoyable. — 20 days ago
