I tasted the 1982 Lynch-Bages twice within a month, both at a private dinner in London and at the château, from bottle and double-magnum on separate occasions. Both vindicate an exceptionally fine 1982, perhaps a bit overlooked in a vintage full of stars. Curiously, the bottle in Bordeaux does not fully deliver the mesmerizing freshness and energy compared to the bottle in London: pencil-lead-tinged black fruit intermixed with clove and freshly-rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, perhaps just a little austere compared to its peers. Yet, indeed, the bottle in London exudes class and composure with a detailed, mineral-driven vintage belying that year's unseasonably warm period. Superb. This 2023 Pinot Noir was crafted by the terroir-focused and precision-driven producer—Martin Woods—with fruit coming from the Jessie James Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA of Willamette, Oregon. This is an east-facing, dry farmed plot, sitting above rocky volcanic basalt soil.

It showcases the beauty and elegance of fruit coming from a higher elevation, wind-swept microclimate, giving voice to this unique site, which was densely planted in 1996 with selections of Wadenswil and Pommard clones.

Winemaking included a small % of whole clusters and a period of aging (19 months) in oak, gracefully contributing to aromatic complexity.

In the glass this wine was medium ruby in color and deeply perfumed with notes of raspberry, cherry, strawberry rhubarb, pomegranate, boysenberry, and blueberry singing in harmony with rose, star anise, vanilla, cardamom notes, a hint of wet stones, and a delicate forest floor characteristic. Flavors echo the nose and the firm acidity holds everything in place.

Almost like a dark-flavored berry compote served alongside the salty, buttery crab cakes, which enhances every aspect of the meal. — 4 hours ago

2015 vintage. Light-medium/medium body. Elegant with just the right mix of primary and secondary characteristics currently. Some earthy tones, some pretty tones. Picked up 3 cases for an affordable ($35 a btl) domestic Cab with a decade of age on it. 2013 effort (not reviewed) had a slightly, off-putting, prunish note on the finish that wouldn’t leave the party so passed on it and went with this instead. 3.11.26. — 5 months ago
