Levantine Hill

Sellicks Hill Grenache 2017

Really black grenache, dark in the glass, black fruited, earthy/bushy, dried herbs, light spice, savoury with a spread, light but grippy mouthfeel. Perhaps a little muted on the grenache flavours. Could almost be 93. — 8 days ago

Freedom Hill Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

Enjoyable with good acid lift. Lime and green apple on the palate yet not lean at all. WBA — 4 days ago

Chalk Hill

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018

@Ron R @Buddy G @Patrick Schultz thank you for all of your good advice! I picked this one for the region, per your advice. It was very earthy at first with lots of acidity. Tonight, it’s so very smooth with lots of fruit on the palate. I will continue to follow your advice and try some other ones. Cheers! — 15 days ago

2012. Nice vintage. It held up? Great to hear.

Kumeu River

Hunting Hill Chardonnay

Excellent partner to homemade Alaskan spot shrimp Alfredo, in the great oak/acid balance. Kumeu is great with further age, but couldn’t resist the screw cap on a Wednesday. — 9 days ago

A huge fan of Kumeu Rivet. Some of the best new world Chardonnay anywhere. Particularly Mates Vineyard.

Sellicks Hill Shiraz 2018

I’m seeing the same influence across the 3 Rudderless wines I bought - grenache (2017), malbec (2017) and this shiraz. A nice little study into terroir. All from a close collection of Sellicks Hill vines, the southern edge of McLaren Vale. All having a recognisably similar earthy, dried-herbs, mild spice dimension. This is the densest of them all, black/purple in the glass, black fruited, gravelly tannin, meaty but balanced. A shiraz with heft and balance - suits me! — 3 days ago

Sellicks Hill McLaren Vale Malbec 2017

I’m not overly familiar with Malbec but this tastes pretty good. Has the Rudderless earthy/bushy/herbal flavours as in the Grenache (Sellicks hill location, picks up the nice sea breeze and has a great view as I enjoyed from Doug Govern’s Victory Hotel). Nice spread and lovely tannin with a plusher fruit profile than the Grenache. Cracked it and drank straight away late afternoon. — 6 days ago

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2012

Light pale lemon in colour. Bath talc and lime aromas, white flowers. Not a hint of Kero. Clean as a whistle on the palate with lime and lively citric acidity. A textural chalky mineral note. Still with a long future. Many good judges feel that this is Australia’s premium Riesling. If it’s not the best, it’s certainly in the conversation. From the Clare Valley SA. — 5 days ago

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Sexy stuff here - particularly for 20 bones: deep dark intensely concentrated but not overdone, after an hour or so it began to reveal black fruits, cassis, a hi toned note, tobacco, cocoa, baking spices, against an earthy backdrop. Solid tannins but extremely well-integrated, seamless on palate thru finish. Stood up well to my filet w/grilled polenta. — 12 days ago

Cooper Hill Pinot Noir 2018

Everything I want from a pinot. A little bit of fruit but predominantly earthy, mushroomy, forest floor aromas and tastes. Nice and light on the palate with good acid and some lingering earthy tannins. — 13 days ago
