Laurence Of Margaret River

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2011

Typical nose of an Art Series Chardonnay with that dried pear character. On the medium weight palate a nice combination of ripe grapefruit and under ripe yellow peach. Medium minus acid. One can’t help but love this Chardonnay. A wonderful terroir, the Gin Gin clone, great winemaking, and an excellent vintage - ticks all the boxes. At its peak but enough acid for a few more years if you wish. That was my last bottle of the 2011. — 5 days ago

@Doug Powers Yes Doug. A good spot for lunch as well where you can get some seriously aged Art Series Chardonnay to go with your fresh WA Marron. Mouth watering just thinking about that.

Xanadu Wines

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Plum, blackcurrants, and mulberries in this lovely, yet tannic and still youthful, Margaret River Cabernet, nice balance, this should improve with 5-7 years of cellaring, very good now!! — 4 months ago

Heytesbury Margaret River Chardonnay 2015

At my Chardonnay Challenge of 6 wines with very close scores the Heytesbury finished 6th. I still gave it 95 points and a Gold Medal. HH said “powerful grapefruit and citrus - Gingin/Mendoza clones and 97 points “. A semi regular annual purchase for me. — 20 days ago

@Bob McDonald, amazing tasting, and some great wines, wish I had been there (you know, there are airplanes from the U.S. to Oz, just saying. . . .)

@Doug Powers I think most of these wines would be available in the US maybe with the exception of the Giaconda.

Moss Wood

Moss Wood Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Generally one of the best Cabernets in Margaret River and therefore Australia. Very dark Ruby in colour. Cassis and blackberry, ripe and rich. I would never pick this as Margaret River in a blind tasting. Where are the herbal notes? But still recognisable as a quality Cabernet. The 2009 Moss Wood was given a poor score of only 84 points by Huon Hooke who is one of Australia’s leading wine scribes. He said “over ripe fruit is the problem “. I have always rated Huon’s reviews and have been a long time subscriber to his website and always will be but I don’t believe he got this right. On 4th July 2012 he said “I can’t see this ageing well” and gave a drinking window of 2012 to 2018. Well tonight at 15 years of age it is drinking very well. James Halliday gave the wine 95 points. — 5 months ago

Thanks for the note Bob. I've got a few in the cellar of this vintage. Are they good to hold for awhile longer? Cheers

Xanadu Wines

Margaret River Chardonnay 2019

Well balanced with a touch of lemon and lime and a bit of oak. Much more familiar with CA Chards but will definitely revisit Australia again. — 9 months ago

Parterre Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Couldn’t pick the bay leaves, sorry. 2019, drunk in 2024. Really nice drinking right now, feeling it will be awesome in another few years. Will try and get a case of this vintage. — 15 days ago

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Riesling 2020

Pale straw . Lemon and lime with some petrol hints ,green herbs , white flower notes as well . Light bodied with high acidity , green apple , lime and grapefruit . Very fresh , high acidity , leaves the palate very fresh , lively . Touch of fresh green herbs on the ok length finish . Would prefer to leave this 2 or 3 years , just to fill out a little more in the bottle and will last well a further 10 or so . — 4 months ago

Fermoy Estate

Reserve Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

See quite a few previous Delectable notes. Interesting back story about Fermoy Estate being served at the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark to Sydney girl, Mary Donaldson. This is my last bottle. A deep dark crimson. A lovely nose of blackcurrant, eucalyptus and herbs. Palate of medium intensity showing those aromatics. A pretty good Margaret River Cabernet from the Wilyabrup district. Probably doesn’t get the credit it deserves being overshadowed by its more famous neighbours in Moss Wood, Woodlands, Vasse Felix and Cullen. — 6 months ago

Parterre Chardonnay 2022

Lean and taut currently, shows more oak and structure than the Singlefile, this needs 2-4 years of further aging, I think, but lovely complexity and long finish. — 7 months ago
