Vine Hill Vineyard Chardonnay 2004

Nice piece of Napa history went down tonight to celebrate the upcoming 15th anniversary at Folly Beach SC. Herbal nose. Aged yellow fruit. Poured medium to dark amber color into the glass. An hour gave this one more aromatics. Cashews, peanuts, rosemary, overripe yellow fruits. The entry was surprisingly dense and full bodied. Palate rather equal to the nose. Finishes with a little more acidity than I thought it would. Went well with an eclectic group of tacos which brought out a kinds of things here. — 4 days ago

Kistler Vineyard Chardonnay 2016

Delectable Wine

The 2016 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard, from Steve Kistler's original vineyard on Moon Mountain, shows a real sense of hillside structure in its deep, phenolic personality. There is a feeling of real textural depth and substance that runs through the KV. A whole range of citrus, floral and savory notes give the wine its distinctive character. There is just so much going on. In 2016, I have a slight preference for the KV over the Cuvée Cathleen, which emerges from a separate part of the property. Thanks to @Mark Flesher for opening this as a side by side versus my 2016 Aubert Hudson. Same vintage, same vineyard source, very different wines. Whereas the Aubert was rich and powerful on both the nose and palate, this was decidedly more herbal on the nose with hay, herbal spices and underripe honeydew. Similar to the Aubert in how round and soft it was initially, but this one has less of the sweet fruit and toasted oak and in turn, has more sea spray, limestone, with added poached pear toward the middle and finish. — a month ago

Compared to a 16 Aubert Hudson from the same year, the qualities of this wine are the same, yet also not so much the same. This wine has more herb on the front (basil, yellow fruit in the background) and more of a rounded yellow fruit finish with some pear and mango. Almost exactly the "anti-Christ" of the Aubert from a structure standpoint. The Kistler and Aubert 16 Chards were really neck and neck to me but I think the Aubert edged it out. But wow what different styles these were. I can see the Kistler going better with game dishes and the Aubert going better with charcuterie. And, in all honesty, considering that I have had some of these Kistlers and their cousins on the more aged side, my belief is that this one is only going to get a little more funky by the year, so I think now is the right time to pop these.

17yrs in and I am fairly surprised at how elegant this is. I loved the nose on this. Blood orange, crunchy cranberry and old black cherry, with beautiful baking spices. It’s still retaining good acidity, showing cedar, red and black fruits and herbal twang on the palate. Slightly clipped finish, but it’s 17yrs old! Wonderful for its age. Thanks @Dan Fitzgerald . — 3 days ago

A few days late in posting the Wednesday Wine Committee wines. Standard format with 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert wine. All served blind.

One of the better Kistlers I’ve had. Green tinged in the glass with gorgeous notes of keylime pie and crust, lemon cream, and honeysuckle. Rich and powerful on the palate...more so than most Kistlers I’ve had. Soft and round profile. Finish has a savory sea salt note. Very nice. I guessed young Kistler Chardonnay.

Best Pinot Noir that I have tasted this year! Awesome grape juice. Went well with the signature toro plate at Morimoto’s in Napa. — a month ago
