My third red wine from my annual CC hosting (others were 2015 Guigal Ampuis and 2015 SamiOdi Hoffman Dallwitz shiraz).
I remember having this wine in the fall of 2018…it was fairly new, and I was flabbergasted at how good it was so close to release, so I bought a bottle. Here we are 4yrs later, and while slightly different, I found it just as delicious.
Double decanted for about 2-3hrs. While the aromatics aren’t as bombastic out of the glass, the polish of this wine is one of the best in an SQN wine I’ve had in a while. Slightly stemmy/herbal, dark floral/potpurri, with notes of smoked meat (more to the rich side, a la Cote Rotie), dark berry compote and mocha. Incredibly powerful yet elegant on the palate, with a rollercoaster of sweet and savory battling all the way through the insanely long finish.
This is new world through and through, but it’s very much nodding to Northern Rhône. The mid 2010s for SQN seemed (to me) to show a change to incorporate more stems, more white varieties (bigger floral aromatics) and slightly less time in oak (and less new oak too) compared to the 2000s offerings, and the trend is continuing that way with the recent releases as well. Love it. — 4 years ago
Bill's in town, so why not kill a Sami-Odi??? He opened the Greenock Creek 02 Seven Acre, so why not this one? This wine has an intoxicating nose like the Sami-Odi Hoffman 0.534 Syrah consumed a few months before. This is definitely a "little wine" to this HD Syrah. Displaying just as much lusciousness in the nose. One person said "I don't know what this is, but I can smell this in the glass for the rest of the night and I would be satisfied." Mission accomplished! The entry is dark, black fruit and a ton of it. Dark, black, condense, full bodied, although the finish seems to be a bit shorter than the Hoffman Dallwitz. Multi-vintage wine of 2012, 15, 16, 17 Syrah. Delicious. Still has 10 years left. — 8 years ago

This is a solid wine from a producer few have heard of. Pete is making some unique wines and I am a fan. Solid structure, ample acidity and not an punch you in the face with extraction and alcohol wine. Could use a little cellar time but the tannins are soft now. — 9 years ago
This is a partnership with Adrian Hoffman. This wine creates a body glow like I've not experienced. The mouth entry just is an OMG long moment. The lush fruits explode and layer over your palate. Ripe, lush, fruits of; blueberries, turning dark cassis, black plum, blackberries, warm soft spices; Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & hints of vanilla, light baking spices, black tea, plum cake, light tarry notes. Then, the lighter red fruits unfold as it sits on the palate. Perfect wine harmony!!! 4 years in oak. — 9 years ago

@Ron R their are a couple listings on winesearcher in NYMy first Little Wine #11 from Sami Odi. An unvintaged assembly of casks from 2021 (46%); 2020 (18%); 2019 (16%); 2018 (2%); 2017 (9%); 2016 (5%); & 2015 (4%). The multi vintage adoption adds different dimensions - quite unique. The wine is a deep Ruby with a youthful purple tinge. Light in that it dances on the palate but there is no escaping that profound palate intensity from those old vines. Dark and luscious fruits. Blueberries and blackberries. Little Wine is meant to be drunk young, even Fraser says that, but can be cellared. Fresh, intense and powerful. I have drunk older Little Wines and the premium Cuvée but have found the extra cellar time doesn’t add the expected complexity. I have a bottle of Baby Tui, surprisingly all from the excellent 2012 vintage to put this cellaring idea to the test at some stage in the future. — 2 years ago
Deeper, a bit more intense than the last. I think Almost Famous with this wine is a better fit. Stillwater. Dark fruit. This is better than I thought it would be. Philip Seymour Hoffman so damn good. “You’ll meet them all again on their long journey to the middle...” — 7 years ago

The Hoffman was nearly the wine of the tasting. Warm fruits; of blue & blackberries slowly lift out of the glass with supple soft spices. It was a hard call to say, was it warm fruit pie or was it more like pudding? I'd say both. The spices in this wine lifted off your palate like warm sun on ground water creating rising steam. You cannot only sense it, you can see them as you sip it. Blackberries, blueberries, black plum, rhubarb, baked cranberries & strawberries follow, black licorice, used leather, dry stems, underbrush, crushed rocks, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, Christmas cake and used coffee grounds. Perfect harmony in body, texture. length, balance, acidity and finish. 5 years in oak. — 9 years ago
My last Little Wine #8 - see previous notes, from only 17 weeks ago - these will be brief. A blend of 5 vintages of 2015 to 2019 inclusive. Very much the product of ancient vines which it is. Black fruits with plums and dark chocolate with those trademark silky tannins and low acid. One could not help but love this. I see Suckling gave this 97 points. I just took delivery of this year’s allocation which is mainly from the fabulous 2021 vintage in South Australia. — 3 years ago

Ouch, not paying $150.00@Delectable Wine this is the 2017 Hoffman Dallwitz. @Fraser McKinley may be able to give you some more details about the name.
This wine would go well with a big ass porterhouse. But this wine needs to be cut with a knife and fork as well! Perfume slaps you across the face after you exert 100 calories trying to get the cork out of the bottle. Black and purple and blue fruits. Baking spices. Cinnamon. Entry is full throttle, but rather soft and rounded. Roasted black fruits, baking spice, roasted nuts. Insane. I'm rather certain that this one is going to be 97/98 in 5-7 years. Has the potential for my first 100! Unfortunately I'm pretty dang certain they will all be gone by then!
Wow! Excellent wine @Fraser McKinley !! — 7 years ago

Trade you 2 Caymus for 1 of those
2016 Sami-Odi ‘Hoffmann Dallwitz’ Syrah. 8 hour decant. Massive nose. Explosive mid-palate. Phenomenally silky texture. Smooth tannins. Stop watch still running on the finish. Just beautiful! And much more open for business than I expected. @Fraser McKinley has it goin on! Label: ‘Our first ten years’ – Painted by Andrea McKinley 1980, Fraser McKinley 1984-1988, Tui McKinley 2014-2016, Mahé & Ribo McKinley 2017. — 8 years ago

2008 Sami-Odi 'Hoffmann Dallwitz' MCMXII Syrah
Sourced from 94 vines, planted between 1888 & 1912.
Harvested 14th March 2008.
Yields of 32 hectolitres per hectare.
388 Bottles filled.
Label: ‘Villie-Morgon’ postcard;
Image sourced Paris 2008. A special treat from my friends @chuck_gudas in conspiracy with @fraser_mckinley, a rare treat of an early Sami-Odi offering. We decanted this wine for several hours, and then re-visited 24 hours later, and the wine continued to evolve and improve. Explosive nose of freshly baked cherry pie. More bright red fruits on the palate with a brambley undertone, and soft silky tannins. Wonderful mouth feel with a long, lingering finish. Thank you Chuck and Fraser! — 9 years ago
Thank you for sharing this delightful Sauvignon Blanc with me @Grace Hoffman I love the acidity. Wish I had a huge salad or a nice cut of salmon right now.... beautifully tropical. — 9 years ago
