Reliably consistent introductory Red Burgundy. Bright garnet/ruby color. Aromas of fresh red fruit with hints of red flowers and subtle spices. Flavors of red berry fruit (strawberry, raspberry and currants) with additional flavors of red licorice,baking spices and earth. Long, crisp and fresh finish. No sign of oak aging. Medium bodied with a very silky tannin structure. Granted, it lacks the complexity of high end Red Burgundy, but this wine’s fruit forward simplicity is charming. 2021 vintage. Decanted and passed, with high air, between two decanters four times. If it were Caymus, woulda used a blender and forgotten. Last tasted 8.5.26 (9.6) Older (60's, 70's and early 80's) vintages more fruit driven which is quite the surprise in the current Napa Cab climate. Arguably the best GDL Private Reserve this estate has ever made. That goes back six decades. Supple, velveteen entry without the temptations of appearing over-extended. Structured mid-palate. A seeker's wandering, yet undeniably substantial finish. Taste it and you tell me. — 10 days ago

Cheers to a sparkling weekend!

We’re launching into it with this beautiful bottle of grower bubbly produced by H. Goutorbe with 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay hailing from estate vineyards of Aÿ, a coveted terroir in the Grande Vallée de la Marne.

This “Special Club” cuvée comes exclusively from the warm 2015 vintage, which faced hydric stress and drought conditions.

For producers like H. Goutorbe, the vintage yielded fabulously ripe grapes lending supple, plush qualities to their expression in the glass.

The concentration of fleshy fruit character matches well with Goutorbe’s extensive lees aging over the course of many months, finally disgorged in October, 2024 with a Brut level of dosage.

The mousse and mouthfeel are creamy and fine with layers of honeycrisp apple, ripe white peach, mango peel, kumquat, lemon curd, oyster shell, piece crust, brioche, toasted almond, nougat, and chalk. — 10 days ago

Wow. This is serious stuff.
Candied lemon, reductive hints of matchstick, smooth and spicy mouthfeel, creamy vanillin, beautiful veins of acidity. This might be the best Bourgogne Blanc in my cellar. We’ll see, as I plan to evaluate them in the months to come. — 3 months ago

Tasted blind. Again medium deep ruby with medium wide garnet rim . Again slightly aloof , showing a touch of herbaceous blackcurrant , mineral and slate notes . Probably the most closed of all coming back . Quite deep and rich again , mineral , blackcurrant, wet stones . Muscular tannins and balanced acidity , deep with a slight herbaceous touch on the decent finish . Latour ? Compared with the rest this is slightly pedestrian, even though it is still an excellent wine it’s not as thrilling as its Pauillac stablemates Lafite or Mouton. Perhaps needs even more time , come back in 5 years and will last well a further 10 -15. — 18 days ago
