Charles Krug – Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Napa Valley, California – USA 🇺🇸
Overview
The 2017 vintage of their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted primarily from estate fruit across valley-floor vineyards, showing an approachable and structured style. This wine is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon with small supporting portions of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc to round it out.
Aromas & Flavors
Black cherry, plum, and blackberry are joined by subtle layers of cedar, tobacco, and baking spice. Hints of mocha and graphite emerge as the wine opens, bringing complexity without overshadowing the ripe fruit core.
Mouthfeel
Medium to full-bodied, with polished tannins and a backbone of balanced acidity. The mid-palate is rich and velvety, while the finish lingers with dark fruit, oak spice, and a whisper of minerality.
Winemaking Notes
Aged 18 months in French oak (about 35% new), this wine is a balance of tradition and modern winemaking. Charles Krug continues to champion elegance over excess, and the 2017 vintage shows restraint despite Napa’s warm growing conditions.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, beef short ribs, or roasted portobello mushrooms. Aged gouda or firm sheep’s milk cheeses also complement its depth and structure.
Verdict
A polished, reliable Napa Cabernet that honors Charles Krug’s heritage while delivering a style accessible to today’s wine drinkers. The 2017 is drinking beautifully now, with enough structure to cellar for a few more years. — 9 months ago
It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix.
Deep purple in color with a short purplish rim.
Beautiful nose with lots of chocolates and light earth notes.
Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity.
Dry and very fruity on the palate with nice complexity.
Showing black currants, cooked plums, cedar, tobacco, vanilla, dried figs, raisins, licorice, light earth, peppercorn, cola, spices and dark chocolates.
Long finish with fine grained tannins and crushed peppercorn.
This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley. Big and bold. Spicy and tangy. Showing nice complexity at this point.
This 6 year old is drinking beautifully now. Rich yet elegant. Extracted and easy drinking. Well balanced and really delicious.
A beautiful surprise. I had the 2016 a few years ago, and this is drinking much better now. I did not expect it from the 2017 vintage.
Thank you Mike for sharing this with me.
Good right out of the bottle, and good by itself as a sipping wine. Robert Parker 93 points.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
15.2% alcohol by volume.
94 points.

I bought half a case of the 17, since the price and quality didn’t exceed my pain threshold. Very extracted and dense. You can certainly taste the fault lines in the vintage, but they are in the background.
Saluting those men and women who paid the ultimate price, and those who serve, or have served. Thank you one and all. — 4 years ago
Big Napa fruit. — a year ago
Same notes as before but maybe a bit more exclamation. Fruit is rocking! Ripe black and blue fruit, sweet plums, coffee cake, sweet pipe tobacco. Really lovely mouthfeel. Drinking very well pnp, impressive amongst the 2017s. Gonna bump it up to 9.4. — 3 years ago
Hard to go wrong - 2025 Christmas with a leg of lamb roast. Delicious. Had it open and then decanted for about 90min ahead of time. Opened up nicely. — 6 months ago
Drinking in 2025. Plums and dark fruit on nose, hints of tobacco and smoke on front of palate. Sorta gets lost after a great start, with short unremarkable finish. — 9 months ago
Mellower than expected with age. Might be a good balance a few years sooner with more oak. Still excellent and a wonderful treat. — 2 years ago
Excellent. Mango, mint, apricot, white peaches, pineapple, nectarines, and coconut. Very refreshing and delightful. — 3 years ago
Earthy damp leaves and rain on the nose. Dark fruit like plum, blackberry, cherry. Some fairly healthy acid and tannins that give it more of a dry finish but not overwhelming so. Opens up nicely as it sits. Was a bit tight when first opened but given it’s a 2017 that’s to be expected. — 3 years ago
Great Sage
Rich, lush, good body and acidity. Perfect just now. Paired with steak. — 4 months ago
