I recently had a conversation with a few Joseph Phelps Ambassador’s at Pebble Beach Food & Wine in April. I said, I had every vintage of Insignia back to 2006 in storage. They said, “you should really drink up the 2006.” So, I coravined an 06 last weekend, a taste. I agreed then. But tonight not the case, it shows it still has a fair amount of life. Another 5-8 yrs and perhaps plus.

The nose reveals floral; blackberries, black raspberries, both plums, poached strawberries, dark cherries and blue fruit notes. Melted dark chocolate, mocha, caramel, softly layered baking spices, very underrated graphite, steeped tea, mid berry cola, red licorice, limestone powder, dry top soil, dry twig, red, dark candied to slightly withering florals w/ liquid violet cola.

The palate shows well resolved, rounded, velvety M+ tannins. Nicely ripe fruits that are floral; blackberries, black raspberries, both plums, poached strawberries, dark cherries and blue fruit notes. Melted dark chocolate, mocha, caramel river, softly layered baking spices-clove, nutmeg, cinnamon stick & vanillin, warm caramel, dark Asian spices with palate burrowing heat, dry tobacco/ leather, cedar, grilled meats, very underrated graphite, sweet tarriness, black licorice, steeped tea, mid berry cola, red licorice, limestone powder, dry top soil, dry twig, red, dark candied to slightly withering florals w/ liquid violet cola, candied to withering; dark, red, blue florals wrapped in liquid violets, epic rainfall acidity, well balanced-structured-toned, elegant finish that lasts minutes and falls on earth & heated spice.

Medium Ruby color with aromas of berry fruits and spicy floral notes. On the palate flavors of tart cherry, blueberry and red plum with pepper spice, burnt toast and herbs. Fine chalky tannins, medium+ finish ending with fruit, spice, floral and slight earthy character. Has short term aging benefit, but nice now! — 8 months ago

The 2021 Saint-Joseph used roughly 50% whole-clusters during fermentation. In comparison, 2022 saw 85% inclusion, while in 2017, no destemming was applied. Coming in at 12.5% alcohol, the deep purple-hued 2021 unfurls with pretty red fruits paired with leafy undertones and cedar. Orange blossom and rose petal add welcome floral lift. Light to medium in body, this is a delicate Gonon, neatly framed by velvety tannins and bright acidity. It should drink well right out of the gate. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Really incredible nose. Super sweet and full of peaches and floral notes. Like walking through a Georgia orchard on a cool summer night. But the taste is playfully acidic and finishes dry and crisp. Still a lot of peach but you'll hear no complaints from me. — 7 years ago

Taste: velvety, vibrant, fresh wine with brambly dried blackberry/cherry, earth, graphite, wet stones, and a cedar gamey raspberry long finish. YUM! Opulent, ripe and structured, a superb combination of full flavor, intensity, and backbone. Its color is beautifully deep and concentrated. Subtle floral notes of lilac and rose petal lead into complex aromas of earth, black cherries, cranberry, black tea, allspice and clove. Full bodied and harmonious, the mid palate is layered with sweet, supple fruit and flavors of pomegranate and cherry.
Aged 8-10 months in barrel. Elegant, ripe dark fruits, cassis and violets with spicy and smoky notes. Young but pleasing. Refined and rich; shows plenty of red fruit goodness; a bit bright and lively now, the wine could use a year or two to settle down — 7 years ago

The nose shows plush and rich profile with waves of blackberry compote, plum, cassis, mocha and cedar. Yet the palate is surprisingly restrained and composed. The modest 13.5% abv lends balance, allowing floral nuances and graphite minerality to emerge beneath the polished richness.
