On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our conductor Andris Nelsons is leading GERSHWIN (Piano Concerto in F), GERSHWIN (Variations on “I Got Rhythm,” for piano and orchestra) and STRAVINSKY (Petrushka) with the amazing Jean-Yves Thibaude as the piano soloist on the two first works presented today. Jean-Yves is by far among our favorite pianists to grace the Koussevitzky Shed stage, so graceful, yet poignant!
Hot days call for cool wines, today there are some fun ones planned for sharing.

This, alongside the ‘09 Rivers-Marie Summa OV and the ‘12 Marcassin, were all tied (in my opinion) for WOTN. This is a massive Pinot and benefitted from some air time. Cherry liqueur like enter which then turns darker to a black cherry baked pie, spice, and candied blackberries. There was a sweet, but not rich, note on the mid palate that reminds me of a mixed berry cobbler. Lengthy and flavor packed finish. Just beginning to enter a prime drinking window. Yellow-white, excellent clarity. White floral and lemon peel notes in nose. Candied lemon fruit flavor, slight trace of lemon fruit sweetness with a core of lemon pulp tartness, good acidity overall, mineral finish with lingering lemon fruit flavor. Really intriguing varietal, well made wine. Five variations on fresh lemon expression in a white table wine? It could be, impressionistically, at least. — 6 years ago

Another surprise of the night for me. I’ve only had their Syrahs before. Lots of crushed potpourri and underripe red fruit on the nose with a darker palate of violets, black cherry and plum. I need to get some of these. Awesome bottle, @Bill Bender . — 8 years ago

The most Burgundian styled Pinot of the night. I thought it was fantastic, and still has another few years to get even better. No candied notes, more underripe red fruit (cherry and rhubarb), potpourri, graphite on the nose. Acidity is great. Not quite lean, but not a fruit bomb Pinot. Sage and herbal. Deep purple color with some ruby variations towards the rim. High viscosity. On nose wine is clean medium plus intensity. Blue and black fruits. Tart plum, raisins. Oak present. On mouth wine is very fruity almost appears to be sweet. Acidity appears low but high alcohol is not noticeable, so acidity must be higher. Tannin really silk — 2 years ago

One of my bottles. After getting these in a few weeks back, I was like a kid on Christmas to see how it was tasting. All the check marks for this to be a knockout in a few years. Wonderful red and black fruit medley with sharp acidity. Mineral/graphite on the palate and sandalwood. Toasted black cherries and ripe plum. — 8 years ago

Older Marcassin pinots...what more can be said other than special. However, I think this one was quite muted on the nose and wasn’t entirely as expected. Age has leaned this out, and the red and black fruits are battling with earth and herbal components. Dirty raspberries and bay leaf on the finish. Even a slightly off bottle of Marcassin is impressive, so thanks for bringing, @David L ! — 8 years ago
