Mouton Rothschild For Philippine Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

The 3rd wine at the First Growth Bordeaux lunch at the Downs Club last Saturday. My contribution to the lunch. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Opulent and Powerful. The experts say this is a 50 year wine and tasting it now at 39 years currently it will definitely not have an issue reaching 50 years. Mint, spice and black fruits. The masses of dry tannins 20 years ago are starting to resolve. Jancis wondered in 2004 if they would ever soften. I have one left which I hope to drink on its 50th birthday in 2036 if I am still around. This was the oldest wine in the lineup and also the most robust. — 9 days ago

One of the very first wines I tasted…

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Dark and brooding. Tangy plum fruit, roses, blood and dried herbs, iodine. Very intense and serious. Blackcurrant and black pepper with plum and black cherry. Long and quality. — 8 days ago

Le Petit Mouton Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

This wine screams left bank Bordeaux. The final blend is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon; 22% Merlot; and 15% Cabernet Franc. Great depth of flavour particularly for a 2nd wine. The medium + palate shows an inner core of strength and opulence which exhibits the class of the producer and the excellence of the vintage. Tertiary aromas and flavours. See last Delectable note of 2020. Very integrated, balanced and polished. Prompts the old saying in a London Club, “Just damn good claret my man”. Excellent drinking now but still 5+ years left in it. — 2 months ago

Pauillac en hommage a Pauline Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

Popped and poured; enjoyed over a red sauce pasta night at home. High shoulder fill, but the cork completely disintegrated during removal. Juice is still drinking exceptionally well; shockingly fresh for being 40. Tons of black fruit and strong spices, with its age showing via expected tobacco and leather notes. Very structured via strong tannins and acidity; long and smooth / velvety finish...meaning this still has room to run. Cheers! — 2 months ago

Really solid, moderately priced pinot. Delightfully light, reminds me of a carneros pinot, nice with a little chill and any summer food you can think of. — 8 months ago

A nice Bordeaux/Rhone type blend. Nice and a little weedier than theAussie blends that likely inspired it. — 10 months ago
