"Little Wine" #6 Syrah

Shay A
9.5

My infatuation with these wines is nothing new, but this was my first time trying one with a touch of age. This Little Wine #6 is a blend of 4% 2012 vintage, 5% 2013 vintage, 44% 2015 vintage and 47% 2016 vintage. This was released in the beginning of 2017.

As if this alone wasn’t a treat, a buddy opened up the single vintage from the same release, the 2015 Mahe & Ribo. Similarities abound between the two, but I found this to be more sweet, rich fruit and less savory/roasted character. I wish I could have a candle from these wines because for me, there is no wine out there that has better aromatics than these. Absolutely fills the room with gorgeous dark fruits…high toned with jam/preserves notes. Sandalwood is evident too. The palate is very Aussie Shiraz like without dialing everything to 11. There is intensity here, but it’s not too much. Similar notes on the palate with so much back and forth of rich fruits with violets to sweet espresso and black peppered dark chocolate. Round and silk like on the palate. Enjoy now or hold.

Pitrou St. Joseph Syrah 2015

Great nose of dried red flowers and red fruit. Juicy yet elegant fruit on the palate with an undertone of earthiness. LOVE! — 6 years ago

les pins Crozes Hermitage Syrah 2017

Sandy, decomposed granite soils. Richly textured with a firm, tannic backbone support its dense fruit. Ripe, pushing soaked, black fruit, roasted meat, garrigue, talcum, menthol, violet, leather, and loads of pepper. There’s a firm thread of granite and sanguine throughout. This is wound up, I love the texture though, grainy and raw. It needs some time to harmonize its finish. Baby Hermitage! — 6 years ago

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Dard fruits, cherries, some vanilla and liquorice. The palate is amazing as usual for this great wine that I love, some power and class at the same time, balance and energetic fruit with that deliciously long finish.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. Black plastic cork; the standard for Dard et Ribo. The 2015 “Les Rouges des Baties” pours a deep, dull ruby/purple with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of wild black brambles, oil cured olive, roasted meat, purple flowers, black pepper, a mix of organic and inorganic earth and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. An utterly beautiful expression of Crozes-Hermitage and this worked really well with goose from South Dakota. I’m smitten. Drink now through 2035. — 7 months ago

Pé du Loup Crozes-Hermitage Marsanne Roussane 2017

Expresses its windy exposition and kaolin clay soils, the fruit is dialed and taught with firm tannins driving the wine through the finish. Mineral underpinnings. Despite its nerve, the classic D&R buoyant fruit emerged. Would like to see it in 1-2 years to see where it is. — 6 years ago
