Cascina I Carpini

Giacomo Conterno

Cascina Francia Barolo Nebbiolo 2009

Medium ruby centre with wide light garnet rim . This is a bit less fruit driven than I remember the last time I had this , 3 years ago or so . Nice spiced red cherry , blackcurrant , porcini , dried spices, touch smoky , dried rose and a balsamic hint . On the palate sweet red cherry , balsamic tinged blackberry , herbal and smoked black tea notes . This has very fine , velvety sweet tannins , and still quite good acidity , just balanced alcohol, I would drink this on the cooler side . The finish is medium length and with a spiced , liquorice note . This is firmly in its prime drinking window , showing some development whilst maintaining good density and ripe fruit on the palate . Drink now and over the next 5 -8 years or so . Not the most complex Cascina Francia , but incredibly enjoyable to drink now . — a month ago

Rocche di Castelletto Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

Beautiful Nebbiolo colour, obv. Floral, berry, and cedar on the nose. Nice structure, well balanced - fruit on the palate with some spice. Nice tannins. Alcohol is a bit prominent maybe? Elegant wine. Can’t buy Barolos all the time so not able to rate on a Barolo basis but I def like this wine. Lots going on. — 4 years ago

@Ron R some of them - I go through phases and try to learn a bit about range within styles/varietals/regions - I find it difficult to pinpoint things without some focus… You mostly mess with the Californians? I’m in Toronto so we end up carrying a lot of the the really flabby pruny stuff here so i get scared off 😬

Hi @Ben Gunning. Thanks for responding, Canuck 😃
50% of our cellar is French/Italy/Spain. But wifey is all about the Napa fruit-bomb, so she has taken me hostage. I’m often in Toronto, as I study at Rotman. And I understand the issue when trying to buy wine in Canada. Govt control sucks, eh?

@Ron R no sh!t! Small world. The gov controlled liquor board has its pros and cons…. There are a couple good locations. Also, interestingly, during covid they started permitting some restaurants and wine bars to operate as wine shops to survive so it has gotten better - lemme know next time you come up if you want some recommendations! If you can snag a bottle of Pearl Morissette, they are pretty special…

Cascina Fontana

Barolo Nebbiolo 2008

Haven’t had Cascina Fontana before and glad I got to try it - very nice. It’s been a bit since I’ve had a wine with good age - for some reason we have had a lot of younger wine of late. Good reminder of the potential. Still majority primary but some secondary present too. Earth and tobacco but great fruit expression. Excellent acid. Pitch perfect pairing with veal Marsala at Carbone. — 2 months ago

Cascina Maddalena

Capotesta Lugana Turbiana 2022

This is another Lugana wine, 100% Turbiana. It differs from the “Clay” in that it’s 100% stainless steel, whereas the Clay has 10% of the grapes aged in (old) oak barrels. This is a common practice in the Lugana region; one wine release is “fresh”, aged in all stainless steel, made for immediate drinking, whereas the reserve release has up to 10% of the grapes in restrained oak, and is intended to be aged a bit, like a Riesling.

This “fresh” wine has stronger flavors than the Clay. It really reminds one of a top-tier New Zealand SB. The citric flavors are there, but not overpowering; however, the finish has that bright acidic buzz. The body has the grassy tones that I am coming to associate with this region/style. There’s a touch of sweetness, easy to miss, which comes to the fore when paired with spicier foods.

I wish these wines were easier to procure in the US! They’re made primarily for the German market, hence the similarities to Riesling.

Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco Malvasia Nera 2022

Medium ruby in color, sparkling; raspberries and blueberries on the nose; tastes like cherry jolly ranchers and candied berries. A really nice dessert wine. I like it. — 4 months ago

Cascina Sot

Langhe Nascetta 2019

White lily flower and peach notes, then a lot of mint and marigold around the cool, herbal center. Beautiful deep gold color in the glass. Great length and lean but intriguing texture; some light curry notes develop with time. I love how this variety balances the floral and the mineral, reminding me of pond lilies. Lean and juicy like fresh white peach juice. — 3 years ago
