100% Hárslevelű from Hungary’s Somló region. Deep gold color showing the age. Wet hay and dried apricot nose with honey undertone. Also reminds me of the sweet burnt caramel aromas of creme brûlée. On the palate sweet tropical fruit acidity (mango, pineapple), mineral and earth throughout. Heavy weight and plenty of texture puts this in the same league as some of the best Burgundy whites. From @sommselect dot com: This wine is farmed and crafted by Fekete Béla who is a 90-something-year-old unsung magician that turned a few acres of an ancient volcanic hillside terroir into thought-provoking wines with fathomless depth. It really is the work of a magician. — 8 days ago

Color of a young white wine, soft but bright straw-yellow. Mineral and herbal nose. On the palate, true expression of Sauvignon Blanc: Herbal, zesty and lime freshness, fleshy and round. Not overpowering acidity, just enough to keep the structure and the foundation of the wine solid throughout the finish. @sommselect I guess I kind of understand the profile of Sauv Blanc from Kimmeridgian soil. Fascinating... next time will taste a Chablis alongside to taste the similarities. Did a bold pairing with fish curry (paprika, coriander and ginger mainly), went really well especially because the dish did not have any creamy or buttery flavors. The fish has fats that is really oily (very Asian), so that kind of complemented this wine I think! — 16 days ago
Grape: Baladi, from West Bank, Palestine. Medium ruby color, tobacco and blueberry nose. The nose reminds me of a Rhône wine because of the gamy and fatty meat flavors. On the palate, it’s a good balance of fruit, tannin and acidity, but lacking length. The wine has the earthiness of a Bordeaux and game flavors of a Syrah. From @sommselect dot com: “From a 133-year-old winemaking monastery, made from Holy Land native grapes like Dabouki, Hamdani, Jandali, and Baladi. They are all planted in the Biblical Hills of Bethlehem and Hebron.” — 7 days ago

Coming back to the Greek red wine I had last night... it’s worth a special post. Dark fruit nose, lots of spice (black pepper, cumin, clove, nutmeg) on the nose, soft herbal notes as well. Deep garnet color like an Amarone. On the palate, lots of plum, soft acidity nicely balanced by tannins. Oh the tannins in this wine! The lingering tannin is so powerful, it makes me think of tannins in a Barbaresco. It is also so grippy that I feel like I am biting into the tannins and craving some braised beef. By the way the wine is from 2010 vintage!!! For $22 this is a gem… and @sommselect I think this wine is going to age more than 5 more years. I just had it 24 hours later, and the tannins are still kicking in high gears. — a month ago
