Johan Reyneke’s Cornerstone blend is a match for many a decent Bordeaux, and in the 2018 vintage is particularly good. Replete with classical aromas of cassis, pencil shavings and cedar, the palate follows with great elegance, structure and a chalky, long finish. If anything, I’d prefer a little more savoury character as this tends towards sweetness (but not over-extraction), but it’s young right now! It’s extraordinary how inexpensive this wine is - it would knock the socks of some Bordeaux Crus Classés in a blind tasting. — 7 months ago

Tried this with no expectations and it knocked my socks off. Dark fruits on the nose followed by a burst of coffee, chocolate, berries, and spice on the palate. Texture was velvety but not overly tannic or acidic. Definitely a favorite! — 3 years ago

Was expecting to be barefoot after trying this wine given all the high ratings. But still wearing my socks. Very nice wine; dark fruits up front with a bit of leather. More full than mid body, but smooth tannins. Went well with the lamb.

Attempting to accurately capture the depth of this cali cab is like putting socks of a rooster- you get scratched and your cock gets angry. Don’t let the fight dissuade you though because the cigar box nose lifts you towards a state of transubstantiation as medium minus acidity beckons you towards a bed of tannins. — 9 months ago

Undisputedly one of the world’s greatest rosés, this wine has levels of complexity most pink wines can only dream of. And with age? Kill me now. 10 years on this wine smells of potpourri and dirty socks, orange peel and dried herbs. In the mouth, dried exotic citrus flavors and dried strawberries are carried across the palate in a silky mountain stream of minerality as dried flowers and a tiny hint of pink peppercorns linger in the finish. Gorgeous, layered and constantly evolving this is a wine of meditation if there ever was one. — 3 years ago

This super drinkable rosé pét-nat is a mix of red and white grapes. It has this mouthwatering bright acidity (thanks to Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc) and red-berries fruit profile we should blame Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt for. Refreshing as a chilled watermelon on a hot summer day.

Incredible, fragrant nose - sandalwood and bursting with black currant, maybe some black tea in there, too. Dry mouthfeel, like wool socks that were kept in a wooden drawer all season and then somehow got left out in the rain. — 3 years ago

I’ve got to hand it to the self proclaimed bum, @H.B Treadway, this ain’t half bad at all. While the nose is a touch compressed, it gives up white peach and citrus notes. On the palate, it’s a party in your mouth. Very energetic, crisp and laser-focused. Very tropical with just enough sweetness and tension for it not to be overly ambitious. At $22, it’s a summer case buy. Hope you can locate it - only 500 cases of this vintage are out there. — 5 years ago
