I was given this bottle as a birthday gift from some close friends a couple of years back. Last night, we had them over for a holiday dinner and figured now would be just as good a time as any to open and enjoy with them! I pulled the cork about two hours prior to dinner, just to give it some time to breath. Deep ruby color with quite a bit of sediment present; about to be expected considering it has over two decades of age. The nose is quite expressive with a whole hedge of roses, red cherry fruit, some tar and tobacco too. On the palate, tart red cherries, balsamico, earth, mushrooms and herbs. I think the age has probably softened this up a bit however, plenty of structure remains. I would say this Borgogno Riserva is enjoying a really nice, mid-life drinking window but should drink well for at least another decade and possibly longer. — 6 years ago

the aubry brothers—identical twins—make champagnes of real character and intensity, putting to use of some of the region’s half-forgotten ancient varieties like arbanne, petit meslier, and fromenteau. their meunier-dominant non-vintage brut isn’t your usual entry-level bottle, either: aromatic, rich, and deeply mineral, it seems to feel both weightless and incredibly dense. this is champagne with a point of view, and, better, one you don’t need to own a hedge fund to enjoy—you’ve wasted $40 on something more frivolous than this. anyway... i remain convinced that most of the world’s misunderstandings could be solved in a single evening with the right champagne on the table. — 6 years ago

Very enjoyable Cabernet from a top producer. Wanted to keep it for a few years but heard the dog barking and decided to let him out. Great aromas out of the bottle with blueberry, blackberry and sweet violets and lavender plus a distinct bubblegum essence. Tastes great after thirty minutes, very complex and a little savoury with blackcurrant, coffee and pepper. After 90 minutes it has developed lots of sweeter fruit and a collection of spices and is less dry on the palate. A top quality wine which is highly recommended. Rating is as of now but I have no doubt that this is a 9.7+ in a couple of years — 8 years ago

Aldi advent beers. Ruby rose grapefruit juice color and hazy. Spittle white with bubbles to match. Firewood dropped by tentacles lacing. Ghost squid. Pronounced grapefruit nose is halved, sprinkled with sugar and topped with a maraschino cherry like grandma made for breakfast. Hedge apple blossom, magnolia too. Lemon bread. Pineapple essence. Tart and tasty palate features white and ruby grapefruit that steps off a ledge and plunges to pith and pear, orange peel and zested ginger. Tastes very natural.

A minor ingredient in Bordeaux blends, Petit Verdot is one of those grape varieties that enjoy greater popularity away from home. Notoriously late-ripening, grapes can have difficulties undergoing veraison in Bordeaux, especially in cold years, remaining unusable green berries (hence its name, “little green”). While Petit Verdot often fails to ripen in Bordeaux, it seems to flourish in warmer regions, such as some parts of Australia, California and Spain, where its long-cycle offers winemakers a hedge against global warming. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, the region of Ronda in southern Spain has turned out to be an ideal location for Petit Verdot - which even here, doesn’t get picked until late October or early November.

Cortijo Los Aguilares’ Tadeo is one of Ronda and Spain’s most recognized Petit Verdot bottlings. Sourced from the estate’s El Calero plot at 900m (nearly 3,000 ft) elevation in Ronda, in the province of Málaga. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak for 15 months. Dark ruby color with purple rim. Fragrant, very attractive, complex nose with layers of black fruit (bramble), smoke and graphite, herbal notes, sweet spices, vanilla and violets. Maybe this wine just needed an extra few years in the bottle because this one is singing. Red fruit, plums, green cedar hedge from my youth, roasted meats, and yes, tar and roses galore - a lot going on. Sure, not the most robust Barolo in the tasting room, but a pleasure to drink and better than it was in its youth IMO. This pairing is in honor of my late hero Anthony Bourdain and of the (last ever?) G7 summit being held in Quebec City. I'm pairing this Cali Pinot noir (with rising tariffs in many foreign markets, buy it before prices escalate) with a little light reading for Trump's team on trade (Douglas Irwin is a star trade economist; this is his newly published 800-page history of US trade policy)
But enough pedantry - on, on to the wine: moderately extracted, purple in color, slightly cloudy. Raspberry and hedge notes in nose. Red berry, tutti frutti flavors with a hint of mint, later raspberry, cherry and blueberry, some seed tannins and barrel smoke in mouth. Moderate astringency and seed bitterness in finish. Light citric-lactic tartness in aftertaste. Give it time to open, complex in its crafting but tasty. — 8 years ago

This wine is expressive. I read a kids book series called “a year in brambly hedge” to my children and this tastes like the pictures of mushrooms, blackberries, cherries, in their stores under the hedge. There’s also a game/olive component in the background. I like it! — 4 years ago

Honeysuckle!!! A whole hedge of honeysuckle on the nose with white peach and benzine. On the palate it’s whole peach and minerals. The slightest prick on the tongue too with a sensation of creaminess on the finish. I don’t have a lot of experience with Kerner but this is tasty. — 6 years ago

My first wine since nearly lobbing my fingers off with the hedge trimmers, I can now add nose filling iron oxide to my
Olfactory notes.
Yet, not in this wine.
This one comes on so brett heavy in the nose, slightly brett funk in the pallet at first, then hints of crancherry pie. Long lingering bush fruit acids, with hardly any true wood tannins to describe. I would wait at least 5 years after the vintage date. I was hoping to get lucky twice..
it’s also quite interesting how our common exposure to brettanomyces now has no longer deemed it a flaw, yet can allow it to be part of the wine and experience now.. — 8 years ago
