Bandol Mourvedre Blend 2015

Notes from memory. This was so deep and understated. The fragrance was subtle, but with a grilled hangar steaks slathered in chimichurri it shined. Perfectly mature and so long. — 5 days ago

Lulu & Lucien Bandol Red Blend 2023

9.1

Some nice florals on the nose, a little bloody and meaty; moderately complex. Palate with fine grained tannins, red and black fruits; some chalky minerals, but a pretty big dose of brett unfortunately. Still, the fruit does come through, with a moderate finish. Day 2; less brett and more fruit, still tight, needs 5 years but second day is much better — 2 months ago

@Zach D, do you know where this cuvée fits within the Tempier line? It used to be the basic red Tempier, then La Miguoa and La Tourtine, and then subparcels of those two single vineyards (Cabassou and ??!), among their reds. Since I still have bottles going back to at 1993 and likely a few from the 1980s, I no longer purchase Tempier and thus am out of touch on new developments.

Zach D

From my understanding they started using the designation lulu and Lucien in 2020, it was formerly called their Cuvee classique ie their basic rouge offering. So it’s the same blend as the old basic red tempier. If I am wrong someone can correct me. @Doug Powers

La Migoua Bandol Mourvedre Blend 1995

Unlike La Tourtine, this bottle’s cork wouldn’t come out in one piece, on first sip this is more dark-fruited and almost brooding aromatically and on the palate, massive fruit impression, great balance, also a super long, lingering finish, another WOW! While I hesitate to say this, in the old days I would describe this La Miguoa as rough and masculine, and La Tourtine as silky and feminine, but both are truly outstanding. The price tag from WinEx back in the day was still on this bottle, $22.99. — 6 months ago

In my second wine biz job (mid-80s) I sold Tempier for Mosswood Wines, Gerald Asher’s company. It was a hard sell. No one had heard of Bandol at the time. Tempier hadn’t started making the single-plot wines yet. They had a regular bottling and a “Speciale Reserve” or “Reserve Speciale.” I can’t remember. I loved the wines and visited the region in ‘85 with my wine-hating then-girlfriend. The growers we visited were amazed that an American had heard of their region and were super hospitable.

@Tom Casagrande, the “enhanced basic” cuvée back then was “Cuvée Speciale”, not sure when Miguoa and Tourtine started, first vintage I saw was 1985 (and Kermit was the importer back then). I think Cabassou and La Louffe started in 1993 (a GREAT vintage, I still have a fair slug of that vintage for when you and @Dave finally ACTUALLY get on an airplane). By 1995 KLWM’s pricing had driven me to other sources, thus these 1995s from WinEx in the OC!!

Thanks! I opened the Tempier 2019 recently and it seemed still quite young. Will open a Pibarnon soon to see where it is at currenltly. I understood that 2019 was a quite structured vintage

Château Vannières

Bandol Mourvedre Blend 1998

Goodness this is a beautiful wine. Perfectly paired with roast duck leg with blackberry reduction, this wine does NOT act 28 years old. The nose jumps out of the glass with dark chocolate, blackberry, black plum, spice and crushed velvet and blueberries. The color shows its hand with a little bricking to the edges, but still has a deep pale maroon color that shows she’s got plenty of life left in her. The tannin haven’t lost much of their grip, though much more dry and silty than grippy. The palate is medium bodied, but light on its feet, with less leftover fruit from the age, but still plenty of acidity, with blackberry preserves, leather, plum, balsamic, tar, and beef teriyaki jerkey, with some green peppercorn and a hint of iron on the finish that leaves a looong and fresh impression. — 2 months ago

Rustic, earthy, plenty of tannin, and ripe blackberry. Great food wine. Pairs nicely with rustic dark meat dishes. Drinking great five years in, but feels like this one has aging longevity for more integration. — 3 months ago

Le Pont Bandol Grenache Mourvedre 2022

My dad bought and left this in my apartment. Braved opening it for a steak night, as I am weary to open reds when it is just me drinking because I don’t want to waste any. Safe to say this did not get wasted. I was unfamiliar with Bandols, and this made me a fan. It was everything I love in a red. It was a darker, more structured and intense wine. Dark fruit, but not fruit forward as it had some herbal and earthy notes. Is it gross to say it was almost meaty? Tannins were present but not overbearing. I was raised on big wines and this checked that box. This was perfect with steaks and just great with food overall. Thanks France. — 4 months ago

Bandol Grenache Blend Rosé 2025

Clear pale salmon. Medium + intensity on the nose with strawberry, blood orange, geranium leaf, pink grapefruit, tomato leaf, white peach. On the palate dry, medium + acidity, medium + intensity medium body, long finish and medium alcohol with notes of grapefruit, red cherry, grass, white peach and something plastic that I can't quite identify but isn't undesirable. Outstanding wine and fun to drink on its own without food. Creamy and sophisticated — a month ago
