Kristinus, kékfrankos, Vári single vineyard 2020.
A single vineyard kékfrankos made in a very natural, low intervention way in the region of Lake Balaton (Balatonboglár). 6-year old and still very youthful and almost a bit austere, closed down. It needs time in the glass to open up and become gentler. The nose shows cherry and raspberry notes, along with blood orange zest and a bit of a green touch, green bell pepper, and a bit of leather. The palate is acid-driven, with lively tannins in the rear, there are nice red fruit notes, some width, a bit of matter on the sides, the tannins leave a significantly drying layer over a moderately long finish with fruit, a bit of savoury touch and a zesty, bitter note. Very crisp GV out of the Pannonian region in Hungary, near Lake Balaton. Lots of lemon zest and volcanic minerals - super dry, cutting acidity. Medium body at 12.5% abv, some stone fruit on the nose. With kimchi perogies and Brussels sprouts. — 2 years ago

One of the better wines I’ve had this year (delayed post from Dec ‘22) and a total surprise. From the Keknyelu grape planted in the volcanic hilly region on the north shore of Lake Balaton. Something between carricante and Silvaner. Smells and tastes intensely like wet basalt. Subtle hints of pineapple and stone fruit. Light. Lovely. — 4 years ago

Hungarian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the native Kekfrankos (Blaufrankish) grape. Deep purple color with some periwinkle highlights. Nose is quite herbal combined with sour cherry and Forrest Floor. Pallet is dark cherry driven with hints of plum, blackberry, graphite, spices, leather and vanilla. Great complexity.
