Perbacco Langhe Nebbiolo 2022

Ah, Vietti. Always good. Our dear friend Val has flown in for my wife's birthday, and we are popping a few bottles tonight. This is a very nice expression of Nebbiolo. Lively and fruity, with a touch of rose petal and a little chocolate (on the nose).

Peay Vineyards

Sonoma Coast Syrah 2005

2003 Vintage in Magnum. 14.1% Alcohol. Took a while to soak up some air and settle down but once it did, smooth palate and aged fruit flavors and resolved tannins. Not Gail’s style but nothing wrong with this over several days. Slight sediment but no bottle coating. Tried to have it opened iat a restaurant for a friends retirement party but I forgot bring the Ah-so. Waiter with corkscrew destroyed the cork and I gave up and opened a 2003 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum instead which was perfection. No problem with using the Ah-so at home and the corkscrew has not penetrated the bottom or the cork. Purchased at a ZAP silent auction in 2004 or 2005 so it has the three owners signatures on the label. — 8 years ago

Jacques Selosse

Lieux Dits Aÿ La Cote Faron Extra Brut Grand Cru Champagne Blend

The first “ah ha” Selosse wine for me many years ago. The south facing La Côte Faron is particularly “Selossien” and therefore particularly singular, with its oxidative complexity, textural richness and generous sun kissed ripe fruit expression. Like all Selosse wines, it’s layered and particularly aromatic for Champagne with intense caramelized red berry fruit, licorice and wildflower honey. The palate shows tremendous volume and intensity with a powerful, full bodied and satiny texture and a long, vibrant, mineral finish. So good. — 10 months ago

Yes, the oxidative quality of this champagne stands alone, even amongst other Selosse wines. I adore it.

Bodegas Muga

Reserva Unfiltered Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2018

NOSE: black cherry…clove…subdued pepper…old cedar…cinnamon…plum…sweet leaves…pine cones…smells good.

TASTE: Ah, Rioja. Smooth, mild potpourri and plum. Cherries (you can taste the pits). A slight funky goat-cheesy-yeastiness…medium weight. Tannins subtle, like gentle charcoal. Good stuff. I would love to try this in a few years. 92.

To celebrate our 2-yr wedding anniversary while in Alaska, we had 5-course dinner at one of the premier spots in the state, which just so happened to be at our resort (at the top of the mountain). A Wine Spectator recognized restaurant with an incredible wine list!

A bit of a "homer" wine for us, as it lined up with our normal taste profile. Ah, the Caymus of old! Though a fruit bomb compared to the french red before this, there is no jamminess/over extraction here. The fruit has mellowed out and merged with the spice, herbs, and secondary notes. Cranberry is the dominant fruit here currently, and this has probably 3-5 yrs before it starts its decline.

Clos Pepe Estate

Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2009

I used an Ah-So which ended up being merely a precaution since the top of the cork looked a bit dry. Turns out it was fine. Acidity was stunning at 15 years, some dried fruit on top of cherry compote with ethereal traces of tannins at the end. Delicious SRH Pinot Noir. Miles Raymond would definitely approve! 😉 — 2 years ago

Since Michel Naddef has taken over this estate is a top estate in the Gevrey/Fixin/Marsannay space. One thing I have learned is that these wines need serious air. So my note will evolve. Nose is minty with deep cherry fruit and some lovely intense minerals. But it’s not there yet. Not even close. Tree bark and some developing florals. Tremendous mint, Like a wild mint. Truly beguiling. Hint of meatiness as well. Wow the palate is truly gorgeous with such a meaty vibe and a dark vibe. Super elegant and crystalline pure but man it needs air but so similar to barrel. I will be back. Super sapid and deep with amazing sweet and ripe tannins. What a wine. Ah wow, now inner mouth aromas and elite finesse. But still tight. I think it will be better tomorrow like the Fixin and Marsannay. Dark flowers on the nose. So compelling. — 2 years ago

Merry Christmas Eve-Eve!!! 🎄🎁🎅❄️🌟⛄️

Maybe, it’s the Christmas spirit and/or I really needed a good glass Rosé Champagne tonight but, I don’t recall this ever tasting better. Could simply be a better disgorgement? Ah, I’ll just say it’s Christmas Magic! Cheers! 🍾🥂

Shots around the house listening to our Christmas Eve Mix.

Yup, that’s my Wine Snowman! ⛄️
