Wine Specialty

Foradori

Fontanasanta Vigneti Delle Dolomiti Nosiola 2021

This variety – Nosiola – is an ancient, regional specialty of Trentino-Alto Adige in Northern Italy, known for its distinctive hazelnut aromas that occur naturally, not from long-term oak or bottle aging (which can also contribute nuttiness in white wines). In Italian, “nocciola” means hazelnut, a clear etymological link.

After learning about this unique variety, we had to track down a wine made from it. When we discovered that Azienda Agricola Foradori makes a single variety expression, we were sold!!

This wine was made biodynamically, with ancient practices in the winery, including 8 months of skin contact in clay amphorae. The resulting wine is alive, awakening as it breathes, and evolving from sip to sip.

It first opened with notes of lemongrass, lemon verbena, fresh mint and basil, and delicate white pepper. As it evolved, it took on notes of geranium, white blossom, honeydew, grapefruit pith, elderberry, and wet stones. With even more time, I detected some of that hazelnut character, although, admittedly, it could have been the power of suggestion leading me there…

One thing is for certain: it’s delicious, layered, and like nothing we’ve tasted before.

Clarendon Hills

Brookman Clarendon Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Found this in my local specialty shop for $30 and couldn’t believe that an aged Clarendon Hills would be so cheap. It did not disappoint! Probably a little jammier than expected but the layers of spice and fruit were so delicious. Importantly, Not overly tannic and well balanced. A very enjoyable wine! — 3 years ago

Raventos i Blanc

L'hereu Conca del Riu Anoia Macabeo-Xarel-lo-Parellada 2011

I have been meaning to try this bubbly for awhile! No specialty wine stores in Avon IN. I did pick this up at a liquor store; only one on the shelf. Yes a 2011 for $ 22.99! Does that seem right? @Severn Goodwin ? Present pear, baked golden apples, brioche, mild acidity and honeycomb! — 4 years ago

Livio Felluga

Colli Orientali del Friuli Tocai Friulano 2021

Oh, hello, Friulano!! A local specialty of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in the far northeast of Italy. 🇮🇹

This beautiful wine is the Livio Felluga Friuli Colli Orientali DOC Friulano (2021).

Livio Felluga was an early adopter and pioneer of modern production techniques in the region, employing the use of stainless steel tanks, delicate grape pressing, and temperature-controlled (cooler) fermentations to produce clean, varietal-driven and refreshing white wine styles the region is now known for 🙌🏻👏🏻

The fruit used to make this wine hails from the Colli Orientali DOC, situated on hillside sites, stretching along the border of Slovenia, benefiting from higher altitudes, and cooling Alpine breezes, in support of a firm acid structure.

👁️ This wine has a medium lemon hue with a medium (+) bouquet 👃🏻 of white peach, green apple, Meyer lemon, clementine peel, green mango, white blossom, mint, basil, rosemary, white pepper, and wet pavement (petrichor).

👄 On the palate, this wine has a rich texture and weighted mouthfeel, balanced by medium (+) acidity, supporting its structure, while adding freshness and lift. Flavors are consistent with the nose – well-defined and concentrated.  Alcohol is medium (13.5% ABV) with a warming presence.

We paired this lovely wine with smoked salmon canapés made with lemon-marinated cucumbers and crème fraiche, lemon zest, shallot, fresh dill and chives on Norwegian crispbread, and was a stellar match-up! 🤩

Cheers to the pioneers who’ve shaped the evolution in wine styles we’ve come to know and love!

Reserva Maldonado Tannat 2020

Very impressive. Love a good tannat and hate an under achieving tannat. This however is very good. Bing Cherry and leather on the front. Chaulky black fruit on the finishing notes. Had ours with a specialty pizza of pepperoni and mushrooms. Absolutely a fabulous pairing! Lastly, the spice on this slightly tannic blend is perfect. ♥️ — a year ago

Marsannay Rosé Pinot Noir 2020

Everything you want in a rosé.Crisp, refreshing, opens up as the meal goes on. This got lost in the bday blizzard but was returned to, time and again.
According to Johnson & Robinson @World Atlas of Wine, Rosé accounts for just 1% in Burg, but is a specialty in Marsannay.
I see why.
