Quiet Resolve

The Walls Vineyards

Curiositas Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Not quite sure what Jeb was thinking when he gave this a 97. It's good but not nearly at that level! Needs some age to resolve some of the tannins. Opened up after an hour of air. Hold. — 5 days ago

Pora Riserva Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2007

Tarry notes with menthol and liquorice. Highly savoury medium weight palate - no fruit descriptors except dried fruit finishing with fine grained powdery persistent tannins and M minus acid. I think the tannins in Nebbiolo never actually resolve or meld - with age they get finer but they are always there. Good Barolo needs at least 20 years and for good Barbaresco you might get away with 15 years I reckon. This wine probably could have done with a couple more years. Made for food - in this case pork steaks. — 13 days ago

Domaine Faiveley (Joseph Faiveley)

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1959

(1959 Richebourg - requested a review to resolve the wine identity - nobody appears to have posted on this before in Delectable ). Tasted blind, from two combined bottles. Brownish amber color rims with an amber tawny center. Looks old. Perfumed nose. Notes of cherry kirsch, decayed leaves, prunes, some exotic spice and roses. Smooth sweet and silky in the mouth but not over the top. Tannins fully resolved but the wine still has a solid structure holding it up. This “peacocked” numerous times, exploding with wow-factor moments of crazy enjoyment. Later in the evening it slowed down as you would expect. The spice and exoticness of the highs of this wine put me in Vosne, and the age put me in the 60s. Doesn’t seem like DRC, so I guess 66 Richebourg that is not DRC. The Richebourg part of the guess was pure luck. Rating this for its peaks and wow moments. It’s a great datapoint for future tastings. — 25 days ago

Giacomo Brezza & Figli

Brezza Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Very nice but still definitely could use some time to resolve. Decanted for 2 hours and had with pork chops. Nose is nearly incredible - dark cherry leaps from the glass. At this stage the tannins are somewhat unintegrated - one to try in another year or two. Excellent freshness on the long finish. — 8 days ago

Zöbinger Heiligenstein Erste Lage Riesling 2018

Subdued aromatics with very subtle, fresh green apricot & white peach. But what a mouthfeel! Great depth & precision, layered complexity on a mineral foundation, fresh, clean & clear as a mountain spring, beautiful length. This a beautiful wine, subtle & quiet yet unforgettable. — 14 days ago

La Porchette Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2015

Dark fruit, violets, sleek, aromatic. Tannins are pretty quiet, acid is still kicking. This was pretty damn delicious, esp if you like fruit. Not sure how it will age, but it’s drinking spectacularly at the moment. — 21 days ago

Domaine Auguste Clape

Cornas Syrah 1998

Dark tawny. Mostly opaque. Quiet nose. Modest notes of black fruit, some iron, some pepper. Lacking the punch you want. Tasted over several hours and never shed it’s quiet nature. Drink up. — a month ago

Bricco Boschis Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

definitely the belle of the ball on a night of many bottles, but it is a young one and needs time. It was incredible to contrast this with other wines, if a bit unfair.....like a caravaggio in a post-war contemporary day sale.....this needs a quiet evening and some focused attention. Some deep listening..... — 11 days ago

Sasso di Sole

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2004

I found I really like this producer. Light notes of leather and dried cherry and raspberry. Black tea, fig newtons, and a lil spice cake. The tannnis are there but staring to resolve nicely, medium grained and light siltyness. Acid not overt, medium..? Very well resolved at this point but not peaking yet. Drink or hold. Decant 45 at least. — 12 days ago

Château Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

As others have noted, a world away from modern Bordeaux. High toned, as much red fruit driven as black, minimal (no?) wood or extraction. Accessible with a bit of air and continued to evolve over the next day. Raspberry, plum skin, black currant, tobacco leaf, old leather and earth. Tastes like a decent proportion of cab franc. Autumnal, austere, but not unwelcoming. Feels like something to sip on a quiet night in a wood paneled study by a fireplace. — a month ago
