Bass Phillip

The Estate Pinot Noir 2016

See previous note for a 2016 Estate in September 2022. Mid to transparent ruby red. A gorgeous fragrant nose - red fruited, stalky, dried herbs. The palate just as gorgeous - all those aromatics transfer to the medium weight palate with medium plus intensity. A class act from Bass Phillip as always. — a month ago

Good to see Bass Phillip finally making it to the USA now that it is owned by Fourrier. I have been buying it for decades. Certainly in the conversation regarding best Pinot Noir in Australia. I have many notes on Delectable.

Joshua Cooper

Doug's Vineyard-Romsey Pinot Noir 2020

Just a swig. A little syrah-like, I thought. Probably the vintage. Still, a complex number with good energy. On a separate note, a well-deserved accolade for Josh this year - Best New Winery at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Bravo! — 4 months ago

Giant Steps

Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2021

Bright cherry color in the glass. Notes of red berries, cherry and black tea. Floral throughout and brings a soft tannin finish. Undeniably a Pinot. — 2 months ago

Giant Steps

Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

A week ago I posted a tasting note on the 2018 Giant Steps Nocton Vineyard Pinot Noir that had won 3 Trophies at the 2019 Royal Queensland Wine Show. This Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot repeated the 3 Trophy win at this year’s Royal Queensland Wine Show a month ago. Pale Ruby in colour - lovely aromatics - red fruited, rose petals. Wonderful palate intensity. Barely medium bodied. I wonder how this will cellar? It is so good now you wonder how much better it can get. I have been a long time admirer of Giant Steps and winemaker Steve Flamsteed who I knew from Toowoomba but what is disappointing is how the price has doubled under the new ownership. I used to pay $45 to $50 for the individual Cuvées and now a little over $90! — 4 months ago

Oakridge

Single Block Release 864 Drive Block Funder & Diamond Vineyard Chardonnay 2011

Last bottle of this very impressive Chardonnay. Still very flinty and burnt match on the nose with a slightly sweeter palate than the last note. That grapefruit in its youth is now more yellow peach. Technical notes - using the P58 clone. All grapes were hand harvested prior to whole bunch pressing to French Oak puncheons - 30% new oak. Malolactic conversion was prevented. Drinking at its peak - made by one of Australia’s leading exponents of Chardonnay In David Bicknell. This is world class! — 2 months ago

Yarra Valley Nebbiolo 2021

Lovely Aussi expression of this grape. Lively flavors and smooth in it’s transitions particularly for a wine so young. Closer to a Ghemme than a Barola. Earthy, Raspberry, rose petal, dried fruit, hazelnut. Very approachable young as it is not overly tannic or acidic. — 3 months ago

Yarra Yering

Dry Red Wine No°2 Shiraz Blend 2004

Lighter than I expected but not disappointed with layers of exotic spice and fruit. Very reminiscent of an aged Cote Rotie. — 4 months ago
