St. Joseph Syrah 2019

Lyle Fass

Floral and full of olives. Utterly classic and super pure. Loads of granite and huge dark berry fruit. Aromatic and sensual. Lovely herbals as well. Almost smells like high end indica. Wow this is terrific! Huge power, depth and concentration and big, but ripe and substantial tannins. But of all the normal st. Jo’s I sell this one benefits the most from age. 3-4 years this is what one wants to be drinking. Perfect balance and outrageous freshness. Really long and showing wonderful complexity. After air this gets super duper floral and shows such startlingly pure fruit. Really young with such fine tannins. So well knit and integrated as it airs. The first sip is a bruiser then it gets all elegant and fine. Tangy as well on the finish. A great wine. — 9 days ago

Saint-Joseph Vielles Vignes Syrah 2010

Deep, powerful and intense with exceptional detail and layered complexity. Rich dark fruit, campfire smoke, black olive and violets come at you in waves. There is incredible depth and purity of fruit on the palate that’s backed by lively energy and lift. It’s still quite primary in its evolution with some powdery tannins and oak presenting themselves but it’s such a joy to drink and it’s so giving at this stage. The VV lives up to the hype. — 13 days ago

Grèves Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Drouhin did some phenomenal wines in these lesser years of 2012 to 2014. This is among the best we tasted. Ver bright rubi red robe, oriental spices and violets on the nose, very fine tanins and an ever so slightly rustic finish that added to the quality and personality of this cuvée. We loved it and enthusiastically recommend it. — 21 days ago

Syrah 2019

Lyle Fass

Nose is a bit reduced and sulfury but that will blow off. Some nice berry Syrah fruit and hints of granite. Lovely black and green olive. Spice and smoke as well. For such an inexpensive wine this is showing terrific aromatic complexity. Wow, that’s what I’m talking about! Juicy and so pure. Refined and rustic at the same time with just killer Syrah fruit that is bouncy and juicy. Lots of red berries intermingled with some dark berries as well. As it airs it gets more refined. There is a lot to like here and this represents very very good value. Really longer than it should be as well. As this airs it gets so much lighter and finesse driven. Superb wine! — 9 days ago

Lou Taissou Saint Joseph Syrah 2018

Brought to Tasting Group. Popped and poured; presented in typical double-blind fashion. In the glass, the wine is deep purple with an opaque core. Medium+ viscosity. The nose is simply sensational. Intense aromas of pepper salami, purple flowers, kalamata olives, tobacco, and Spanish paprika. On the palate, the wine is fairly primary at this stage with gorgeous black and blue fruits and a healthy amount of black pepper. There is a lovely freshness about this wine. High tannin, medium+ acid with a long, satisfying finish. What a winner. Domaine de L’Iserand “Lou Taissou” is 100% organic and biodynamically farmed Syrah from Ozon. 60% whole cluster with half the production aged in 600L demi-muids and the other half aged in Flextank. Only 208 cases of were made. — 12 days ago

Madloba St. Joseph Red Rhone Blend 2015

Lyle Fass

Just stupid good. In such a good place. Nose of violets, herbs and super florals. Red and back berry fruit. Lovely granite. So aromatic. Just mesmerizes you. Spices as well. Clean, vivid and detailed. Juicy and super pure with outrageous freshness. Sappy and lovely berry fruit mixed with granite on the super persistent backend. So lithe and playful on the palate but that discounts it’s seriousness. Amazing balance. A stunning bottle of Madloba. — 18 days ago

Saint-Joseph Marsanne Roussanne 2019

Lyle Fass

Mostly Marsanne and this clocks in at a whopping 15%! Nose is rich and ripe. Very pure. Fascinating Marsanne minerality. Buttery but high end French buttery. Smells big. Palate is quite elegant and shows less heat than the 14.5% Viognier. It’s still there but this is rich and dense for sure but also playful and light at the same time. Very juicy, lovely freshness and as the wine opens it retains more freshness and the heat goes away. Marsanne handles alcohol much better than Viognier. Nose gets much more refined and elegant as it airs out and wow that finish is super long. Really well made. Teetering between 9.2 and 9.3 right now. I’ll see where air brings this . — 9 days ago
