A dense Ruby in colour with a tawny rim starting to develop. A lot happening with the aromatics - black and red berries with minerals, earth, bacon, and dried meat. On the palate - rich and wonderfully balanced in this hot vintage. Medium + intensity, medium minus tannins. After some time notes of high quality kid leather and mild tarry notes. One of the reasons I chose to drink this wine was because of a conversation I had with the importer Ramon of Negociants at the recent Burgundy dinner. He was talking about Brett problems with some Rhone wines from hot vintages. When I said I had a La Mouline from 2003 he suggested I sell it. After 100 points from Parker and 18.5+ from Jancis I was never going to do that. I can report this had not a hint of Brett. This had the fluid tannin structure of a mature Hill of Grace. In summary I loved the restraint, balance and quality of this fine French Syrah given the vintage conditions. Shows great vineyard management and judicious picking decisions were made. — 6 days ago
Love every vintage of Gonon- the best St. Joseph IMO. So expressive and giving seemingly at any age, as it was here with 2016. My second 2016 in the last few months. Signature inky purple. Deep and intense with great texture showing black fruits, liquid minerals, newly bloomed violets, black olive and hints of cacao. Wonderful concentration, energy and finesse. Stains the palate with a long and assertive finish. Excellent. — 19 days ago
Too young but rock solid already with great structure and a textbook SJ profile. Jasmine and violets, cured meats, iron and olives, with blueberry and blackberry ooze. I’ll wait a while to open the next bottle and feel confident that it will deserve a higher score. Killer value too. — a day ago
Either mildly corked or brutally closed aromatically. :-(. So no rating. In the cat is alive universe decant for quite a while.
Nose. Occasionally some lilacs peek out from under the sheets.
Palate : Very elegant. Not super grippy. Crushed flowers. Super sweet raspberries. Black cherries. 9.3-9.5. A kiss of awesome elegant licorice.
Finish is a 9.5. So this would likely be very good. Stream of crushed flowers. Long.
ok. This is closed now. After an hour it opens and is great. Blind a more dense and dark fruited Cote rotie. Not rustic at all.
Bought from fass selections.

Decanted only 90 minutes, would have needed at least twice that. Aromas show a meaty side to start with, menthol, moving and getting more complex and aromatic with white pepper, dark fruits violets and herbs. The palate is powerful, full and dense, deep with lots of class, good length and with tannins that are not yet tamed and show a touch of rusticity and youth. A great bottle but a great bottle to be mostly, still needs 4-5 years. 93-94
93-94 — a month ago
3 ha. 100% Syrah from 70 years old vines.
Nice nose with perfumed notes of red fruit, licorice, mineral, spices, integrated oak, mocha, tabacco, full bodied palate with sweet ripe red fruits, leather, vanillla, dark berries, fully integrated smooth ripe tannin, great balance and aftertaste ! 97DSP — 6 days ago
Don’t be fooled. Just because this is the entry level for Clape does not mean this should be overlooked. “Le Vin des Amis” is made from a 1ha vineyard in between the village of Cornas and the Rhône river. This bottle was opened about an hour before it was poured. Deep, dark garnet in the glass...bordering violet. Glass staining. The nose was absolutely wild! Straight up deli case with olive mortadella, and all the cured meats. But it doesn’t stop there. This is well endowed with baked and smoked blueberries and mulberries, dried herbs and lavender. The palate tells more of the fruit story with the lush blue and black fruits taking the starring role. So pure; so dense! Yet, there is minerality and remarkable acidity giving all of the fruit the lift it needs. Tannins are medium. Long, long finish. This wine was fermented and aged in concrete tanks and passes through foudre for two months before bottling. Some people hate on the price for this wine (around $50 these days) considering its humble designation but the quality is absolutely undeniable. A very serious wine. Impressive. — 9 days ago
This is having a great moment. Smoke, olives, dark berry fruit, blueberry. Huge granite and deep mineral tones. Juicy, so fresh, deep and concentrated with outrageous purity and a long finish. Loads of medium to dark berry fruit and really really long finish and also serious structure. What a showing. This has got 15+ years ahead of it but is fun today. These wines will last a long time. — 17 days ago
