Black Saint Peter

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Ripest red cherry and red rose aromatic hybrid. Cherry and strawberry blossoms. Herbaceous basil and tarragon sweetness awash in warm plum and baked currants. Flowering elms with wet black bark. Finally, oak and smoke. Perfect integration on the palate. Ready now but also for the foreseeable. Sweet raspberry and blackberry flash and recede to an obverse tart cherry with incredible indelible, satisfying depth. Sweet tobacco is outlined by Saigon cinnamon, clove, allspice and a strangely sweet pepper dichotomy. Really a perfect wine in every way. Smoke and graphite find a way to bow into the shimmery finish with finesse.

Château Langoa Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Merlot (38%) and Cabernet Franc (8%). Dark ruby color with purple highlights. Dark fruit aromas with hints of charcoal, bramble, mint and violets. Black cherry leads the palate along with notes of blueberry, plum, currants and dark chocolate. Hint of minerals and fresh herbs on the long finish. Juicy, fresh tasting and well structured. Deep Ruby with aromas of ripe black fruits, toasty oak, floral spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry, plum and currants with floral spice, smoke, licorice and oak. Fine tannins, long finish ending with fruit, espresso, smoky spice and mineral character. Nice! Consistent! — 2 months ago

Estate Vineyards Les Pavots Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2005

2008 vintage. From the Knights Valley AVA (Sonoma). A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Very impressive. Ripe blackberry fruit, spices, and truffles jump out of the glass. Powerful and elegant at the same time with layers of black fruit, great balancing acidity, haute couture tannins, and a very, very long finish. Irresistible now, but this should age well for decades. Abv. 14,5%. — 5 days ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2006

Iron and blackberry right off the nose. There is airy clove and black current quality to it that seems to disappear on the tongue. It reminds me of super fine, dark chocolate. The image that comes to mind is a living oak tree— it tastes alive. Pair with pets for a Beauceron, a loyal, intelligent, devoted dog breed that is known for guarding livestock. Sit in front of a fire, drinking this wine while eating some dark chocolate. Or better yet, a hearty filet mignon that you can share with your new Beauceron best friend. — 23 days ago

Ultreia Saint Jacques Mencía 2019

Absolutely delicious Mencía-based blend. It had a great mix of fruity and earthy, combining notes of plum, cherry, and boysenberry with notes of black tea, coffee, and herbs. Checked all the boxes for a beautiful weeknight bottle that would pair well with many different dishes. Blend of Mencía, Bastardo, and Garnacha Tintorera. 5/15/23. — 3 months ago

Domaine Georges Roumier

Clos de la Bussière Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

Roumier particularly crushed ‘17. Even the Bussiere which is a bottling that IMO takes forever to be drinkable opens up so quick in the decanter gaining most notably in density and texture after a somewhat thin first pour. It’s bright, vibrant and pure with layers of black and blue fruit, dark cocoa, spices and earthy soil tones. The palate is seamlessly balanced, deep and expansive with fine grained tannins and a long, lifted and elegant finale. A fantastic vintage for this bottling that is already in a great spot but with of course, its best years ahead. — 11 days ago

Château Lagrange

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

2000 | Red Blend
(65% Cabernet Sauvignon / 28% Merlot / 7% Petit Verdot)
Château Lagrange
Grand Cru Classé (3ème), Left Bank
Bordeaux; Médoc, St-Julien, France
(93-94; Drink 2030-40)

Ripe black currant, damp leather, pencil lead, raspberry-fig bar; Dried black cherry, chocolate espresso cake, faint vanilla. Decanted 10H.

Paired with long braised (local, Columbia Co. NY ❤️) lamb shanks, charred carrots w/ maple glaze and garden mashed potatoes. A great 2023 Easter dinner, BDX is the best pairing for lamb, of many preparation styles.
(We're finding that the cats also enjoy a savory lamb dish. 😉)
