Mosel Kabinett Riesling 2018

At first, this wine is overly sweet. But after time in the glass and warming up a bit, it came into its own. Citrus and stone fruit, honey, acidity cutting the sugar beautifully for a rich finish. Great value. — 4 months ago

Oppenheimer Kreuz Beerenauslese Rheinhessen Silvaner

I really don’t like — or maybe really think I don’t like — sweet wines. But…THIS dessert wine makes me doubt everything I thought I disliked (though it has a dryness at the cherry-sweet center) — 5 months ago

1896 Riesling Erste Lage 2018

Pop and pour. Notes from 3ish hours open. On the nose: ripe peach, soft saffron, meyer lemon, a hint of honey, tarragon...fantastically intense. On the palate: amazing acidity, and balanced density; lime, soft peach, nettle..excellent complexity. Mouth-filling and excellent length. Still very young, but with the balance and intensity, this shows so much promise whilst being very enjoyable already! — 7 months ago

Alte Reben Trocken Riesling 2020

Still a baby with a fresh nose of herby grapefruit, shy lime and cool wet mountain stream pebbles.
Brilliant concentration on the palate with this electric tension, racy acidity and a tight core of salty, slate minerality. Around this are layers of lime, white peach, ripe lemons. Ripe yet with great poise, focus and depth.
They really nailed it in 2020!

Ok it is finally here - the wine nerd herd 5 year reunion has started - in 2016 - the herd met in NYC - there were amazing bonds and friendships developed and are intact to this day and growing
Initially there was
@Carl Fischer @Ron R @Joe Lucca @David L well as myself @Mike R and one other who had such a blast we have decided to this get together as a herd frequently and for most part we have been United and strong even doing zoom tastings whenever
Not long after the initial conclave in 2016 we traveled and expanded to include
@Bill Bender @Shawn R @Eric L. and a true foundation of youth and knowledge @Shay A we have been to Palm Beach, Raleigh, San Diego, San Antonio, Des Moines, Paso Robles and now back to the starting place - NYC - 5 years later
Get ready New York as the herd is running hard and with purpose in the city that never sleeps
The picture / posting are two tune up tastings last Saturday with locals in Raleigh as I need practice a) red wines below 50 and b) red wines above 100
Standout to me was the Muga in the less than 50 and in the over 100 - all were good but Paul Hobbs, myriad, switchback ridge, Pulido walker
Of course the krug and aubert were good but maybe not able to keep up
The carnival of love and Don Melchor were delicious as well but were not equivalent to the Napa cabs that are all world class vineyards and winemakers
Again I say all this to say training is over and let the games begin in NYC as we have landed
Thank you
@Ron R and @Carl Fischer for hosting the herd and I am stoked

I quite enjoyed this South African chenin blanc. I would have guessed chardonnay. Balanced oak. — 8 months ago

Pretty sure I got ambushed by you and the gang on a Cheval-Blanc bender (no participant pun intended) Insane Diego. It was a great night.

As a friend accurately noted: color of dehydrated urine sample, but man did it smell & taste great! These are amongst the oldest vines in Mosel and it showed: stunning depth & complexity here ranging from a parade of yellow fruit: mandarin orange, cling peaches, apricot, quince all drenched in clover honey to slat-y minerals, allspice, cinnamon, grandma’s dusty attic and basement cellar & marzipan. No petrol here, just a hedonistic journey. Silky & sexy, round, still w/acidic zip and a long luscious finish. — 9 months ago
