Detert Family Vineyards
Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Thank you @David L for my Christmas in July WNH present - Sunday night zoom - we became secret Santa’s - amazed how well we did finding and sending covertly wines to others in the group and tasted blindly - this wine to me represents all that I enjoy from Napa and small production wineries - did not decant - Should have - by 2.5 hours mark this wine was in full attack mode - blueberry pie cedar tobacco- legs forever - tannins were supple - color was incredible- I thought because we did not decant that it was a 80/90 decade but the lack of decanting was fooling me - definitely new world and Napa - I got that - after decanted I would said 2010 2012 or 2013 - loved it and thanks again @David L for being Santa for coming to visit and for this lovely gift - by the way - I think you might have exceeded the spend limit lol - final thought - will cellar for 10 to 15 years but it is approaching the proper drinking window

Jul 13th, 2020Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.
Here is the other wine that I claimed may have been the red wine of the trip, and also may have been one of the top winery visits of the trip! Loved tasting in the family home and hearing the connecting stories between them and the Macdonalds. I’ll forever be grateful that Carl Fischer introduced me to Detert years ago, and he helped make an intro so that I could visit this time around.
Detert also makes a small amount of Cabernet (but who am I kidding, all the wines are small production). The fruit comes from about an acre next to the old family home in Oakville near To Kalon. There was a wonderful note of smoked meat on the nose here that I loved. Savory up front with added peppercorn, herbal spice and graphite, but lush fruit on the palate such as blackberry cobbler, rhubarb, chocolate dipped raspberries, nutmeg and cedar. At 8yrs, this was drinking well with a couple hours of slow ox’ing.

Decanted 3+hrs. Aromatics remained tight but dark red fruits and dried tobacco / sage. Medium + body with similar profile. Mineral notes and good acidity. Fine grained tannins.

Apr 15th, 2018Delicious old vine cab full of ripe dark cherries, plum, and mocha. Mouth watering and fruit on full display cut with just enough minerality and polished tannins. Very approachable now
