Southern Oak

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 2014

Mysterious and sexy horse stable nose. Tamarind and mandarin peel with licorice finish. Lighter than gamay, 0% brett, 0% oak, 0% tannin, 100% Grenache. Wow. — 23 days ago

Experiencing a Rayas is on my bucket list.

Domaine du Pegau

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2000

Pegau CdP is always so great, rich Grenache w/dense, ripe redfruits, this 2000 CdP is more fruit forward than the more structured 2001 Vieux Donjon, both wines are outstanding, these 2 wines really well illustrate the 2000 vs. 2001 CdP vintage differences!! — 6 days ago

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2023

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2023 pours a deep ruby/garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity and moderate staining of the tears. On the nose the wine is developing with heady notes of tart cherry, mixed brambles, spearmint, red and purple flowers, old school permanent marker, licorice, tomato, green herbs, clove and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the body is, ooof…very nice. Another delicious vintage of Cuvée Réservée. Drink now through 2043. — 6 days ago

Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2001

This is more youthful than the 2004, yet it also shows more merde than that other Chateauneuf, medium-long finish, I marginally prefer the 2004. — 21 days ago

@Tom Casagrande, sorry, I didn’t notice the Delectable software thought this was a white CdP rather than the red CdP — corrected!!

Château de Beaucastel

Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

Popped and poured; enjoyed alongside Texas BBQ on the plane home. The 2005 “Hommage a Jacques Perrin” pours a deep purple with a ruby rim; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with mostly dark fruits: mixed brambles, black cherry, animale, star anise and black pepper, garrigue and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This continues to be ever so dense but paired admirably with the BBQ. Drink now through 2055. — 8 days ago
