Sandlands

Amador County Chenin Blanc 2018

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several days. Consistent throughout. The 2018 pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Bartlett pear, passion fruit, lanolin, honeysuckle and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and soooooo wooly. These Sandlands Chenin Blancs are fun with some age. Drink now through 2033. — 13 days ago

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 2020

2020 vintage. Unspectacular but solid and keeps coming like the antagonist in a horror movie. Can't stop. Won't stop. Medium/medium-heavy body. Fruit and tannin balance currently. Under $20 USD resto cost. 8.12.26. — a month ago

Reserva Cune Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2019

Bought with a discount at about 13 USD in equivalent Polish Złoty. It's a steal! The nose is very inviting with blackberry, black cherry, bacon, soy sauce, oak, a bit of tobacco too. What a nose ! The palate is very well made, with a great acid drive, some width, some matter, some nice blackberry and black cherry notes, some oily, a tiny bit thicker mouthfeel, some gentle, slightly drying tannins kick off in the rear, delivering a sandy layer over a very long, fruity, meaty, savoury finish that goes on for a very long while. This punches way above its price tag. Great stuff and even better than the 2020 I had some months ago. — 5 months ago

San Hercurmer delle Frecce Shake Ridge Vineyard Barbera 2018

Tart black cherry, anise, pine and alpine vibes, high acidity, low spicy tannins.
A beautiful Cali Barbera with the acidity and spice of Piemonte, with the high toned fruit of California sunshine. I love!

El Dorado Gamay Noir 2016

First vintage post-RPM, immensely enjoyable ten years on. As in Beaujolais, this CA interpretation is losing its original energy over time, but maintains its own signature profile. — 5 months ago

yes, this is a photo of a computer image. tasted as part of a Mourvèdre wine group tasting via zoom, wines portioned into woozies. 2018v. super aromatic, raspberry/cranberry juice, fresh leather, violet. palate texture is silky, light but complex and flavorful, acid medium +, long tannins- just a bit of grip. fantastic — 6 years ago

Imperial Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2016

Ming L
9.3

The nose is immediately captivating with lush crème de cassis and dark cherries, intertwined with the more reserved, classic aromas of sweet tobacco, leather, and dried herbs, and a whisper of coconut. The palate is full-bodied and intense with powerful core of dark fruits reined in by a backbone of crisp acidity and silky tannins. The sweet oak spices and dark berries on the long finish is of particular satisfying.

It will continue to evolve and reward cellaring for another decade, if not longer.

Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2005

This is the best bottle of wine I’ve had from my cellar in years. Nearly perfect. Bought it in 2008 for $30 and one of my great finds. Good lord it was just divine. I’m sure there have been better vintages but I can’t imagine it. — 5 months ago

Reserva Única 2014

The reviews say that it’s over Oaked and imbalanced at least in this vintage but I disagreed. This is still quite tight and while it’s no Rioja Alta, it’s still quite good. — 7 years ago
