Ridge Vineyards

Estate Monte Bello Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Nose has brown butter sauteed pineapple, fresh coconut meat, (damp) crushed granite, faint sea spray and baked pear.

Palate has under-ripe pineapple, lime peel, sugared lemon slice, cold caramel yellow apple, phenolic notes which runout though a medium finish.

Needs YEARS, revisit 2026+.

I was intrigued by the nose but underwhelmed by the palate tonight.

Mount Eden Vineyards

Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir 2017

Good glass as a pop and pour. And that much better with a two hour decant. Beautiful fall flavors. Tastes like thanksgiving. — 5 days ago

Ceritas

Trout Gulch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

Glorious expression of California Pinot Noir….explosive nose of dark plum, cherry, cranberry, strawberry, blueberry, and baking spices. Weightless, lively, balanced, absolute fun to swallow. I enjoy Pinot… but this is another level. Not quite Burgundy, not California, not Willamette….but absolute Socratic Pinot Noir. The meal kinda sucked… but… but this wine almost made it worth the time, reservation, bullshit necessary for decent Covid dining. Bright, lip-smacking, multi-faceted and changing with time in the glass. Smooth, silky, sexy…. Well worth the expense and time in the cellar. — 8 days ago

AleSmith Brewing Company

No. 394 San Diego Pale Ale

9.2 in the 12oz can…9.3 in both the bottle and on tap. This beer,single-handedly, destroyed the entire pale ale competition in San Diego County. — 15 days ago

The Language of Yes

En Passerillage Grenache 2020

Very excited to try this Grenache from Randall Grahm’s new project. It’s super young and was too tight to really evaluate on night 1, so these are night 2 notes.

The color is light-ish, but the nose is inviting, with loads of bright cherry/strawberry fruit, spice, and lovely crushed gravel minerality. Soft in the mouth, the flavors are relatively intense but it maintains a medium weight and silky feel. Great purity and balance. Not a dense wine that will demand attention at a tasting, but a really fine dinner accompaniment (I’m having beef tacos).

Ridge Vineyards

Gonsalves Contra Costa County Mataro 2018

2018 Ridge Gonsalves Mataro (Contra Costa County). This is delicious but flirts with a bit of underripeness (in a good way). Nose has a slight vegetal note (as my brother pointed out), but also has vanilla and nice ripe cherry. No inderripeness in the mouth, with great acid/fruit balance. Delicious and a unique take in that it avoids blowsey jamminess that some wineries get from warm Contra Costa County fruit. — 6 days ago

Azelia

San Rocco Barolo Nebbiolo 2001

Pretty floral notes mix with brown spice, plum and black cherry fruit aromas. This has lovely texture with smooth fruit based tannins and a high toned freshness. Plum and black currant fruit on the palate with a mineral earthy edge and subtle floral notes. Seems ready to drink now and the next 3 to 5 years. From magnum with a 4 hour slow O after a double decant. — 18 days ago

Las Positas

Estate Bottled Livermore Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Giving this a try with 7 years on it. Aging well, oak is finally a little more muted giving way to cedar, sage, mocha, vanilla, and butterscotch. Beautiful expression of Livermore fruit. Balanced acidity. 14.1% — 3 days ago

De Forville

San Rocco Nebbiolo d'Alba 2019

Popped and poured; no formal notes. Abundant, perfectly ripened red fruits, dusty earth, some red flowers and dried herbs. Lovely freshness. This is waaaaaay too easy to like and a stupid good value. A lovely pairing with duck confit. — 17 days ago
