Pinot St. George

Domaine des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2015

First sentence is a tester. Now the full note. We don’t often have Grand Cru Burgundy but we had roast duck legs on Mother’s Day. An intensity to the nose - Sous Bois/Compost heap with savoury red fruits - smoky with a hint of pepper. Many of the experts are saying a high influence of stems in the ferment is apparent and I totally agree. Interestingly Richard Hemming MW gave the wine 19.5/20 and said “This is what all the Burgundy fuss is all about.” Continuing to evaluate - this wine has a beautiful nose (very Morey one taster said). In summary a magnificent wine with great persistence. One of the 1001 Wines. Clos des Lambrays can trace its history back to the 14th century. — 10 days ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

Romanée-St. Vivant Pinot Noir 2007

Medium light garnet with wide light garnet rim . This is quite open and delicate on the nose , touches of rose , cranberry , raspberry and sweet strawberry , very pretty and precise . Some spice and earthy hints underneath . On the palate this is quite sappy with fine tannins and balanced acidity. Red cherry and raspberry fruits , floral and well balanced , quite delicate but certainly with enough intensity on the palate and a silky mouthfeel . This still comes across as quite fruit driven and very refined and balanced , with good freshness . Long red fruit driven finish , just some hints of earthiness , mineral underneath . Vibrant and bright . Drinking well but still with time to go , now and over the next 5 years or so . This doesn’t grow with time in the glass as much as the Richebourg , but still showed well over the 2 hours we had it open. — 19 days ago

A fave winery yet haven’t had their wines for some time.

Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

Initially a bit closed, after two hours in the decanter this really opens up. Black cherry and sage come through on the nose and continue onto the palate with additional notes of cassis, bay leaf, and cloves. Has a persistent finish with herbs, spice, and black tea lingering on the palate. The herbal and spice flavors were really vibrant when paired with basil pesto pasta and mushrooms. Medium+ acidity, medium+ body, and medium tannins. This is the 2021 vintage. — 17 days ago

@Joel Lara Nice write-up. This is consistently their most difficult Pinot offering to "figure out." Oodles of subtleties vs a few markers/demonstrative tendencies. NOT for the average Pinot Noir drinker.

@Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego that’s interesting because as I was drinking it I was thinking about how different it was to a lot of pinots I’ve had. The savory elements are not as loud as they are in other good pinots, but I still found them an intriguing backdrop to the beautiful fruit. The tannin really helped add some complexity on the finish too. I also bought a 2019 Temperance Hill, so looking forward to seeing how that compares.

Domaine de L'Arlot

Clos des Forêts St. Georges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2013 pours a deep, slightly hazy ruby color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with beautiful notes of strawberry, raspberry, dried roses, sous bois, licorice, dried green herbs, gentle warm spices and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and full of rustic character. In general, the 2013 vintage in Burgundy is on fire right now. And as far as Domaine de l’Arlot is concerned, I adore these wines and wish I could drink them more often. Drink now through 2038. — a month ago
