Back when I was a University student 50 years ago I used to smoke a pipe and one of my favourite tobaccos was McBarens Plum Cake pipe tobacco. Tuscan Merlot often reminds me of that. I must admit I often prefer these wines when they are younger with more plummy, black cherry fruit and less earthy savouriness. The 2007 I had some time ago was better. From Tuscany’s Val d’Arno di Sopra, in the hills east of the Chianti Classico region. This is very friendly and pure tasting. Nose has gorgeously pure, ripe Sangiovese scents of dark cherry, along with some gentle spice and minerally gravel scents. Focused and concentrated fruit in the mouth, forceful but soft and balanced. Not a great deal of complexity, but lots of flavor and purity. — 4 months ago

Pop and pour. Lovely. Like Nerello mascalese tinged sangio: smoky, seemingly volcanic, blood orange, tar, a touch of funk. On the palate: lovely acidity, elegant and lighter weight, darker on the back palate with soft chalky tannin. Yum. — 8 months ago

Delicious pet nat. Sediment in the neck, which drifts into the glass- but that’s all there is to complain about. 80% Sangiovese 20% Aleatico. Dry, med/full body, perfect before dinner all in its own. — 4 months ago
