Moss Wood

Moss Wood Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

A controversial wine for Moss Wood, one of the icons of Margaret River. See previous notes - better than the 87 points I gave it 7 years ago in 2014. Ripe blackberry and cassis / lovely perfume. Sweeter, riper and more “South Australian “ than the normal Margaret River Cabernet and the traditional herbaceousness. This was a better showing. — 7 hours ago

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Blackcurrant/blackcurrant leaves, herbs, licorice root, oaky vanilla. Sinewy tannins that could use a little more time. Handles the ribeye with ease. Tough on a 90 degree night of grilling. — 14 hours ago

Vasse Felix

Filius Chardonnay 2017

A pretty #margaretriver #chardonnay - aromas of yellow apple, pear and light honey notes backed by flinty minerality . Medium weight on the tongue, crisp acidity, lemon zest on the finish. There’s definitely a Burgundian character here for a reasonable ~$19 at Costco. — 11 days ago

Margaret River Chardonnay 2014

Pale Lemon in colour. More in the lean style for Margaret River as compared to the richer “peaches and cream “ style of Cuvées like Leeuwin Art Series and Pierro. The oak has been judiciously dialled back not to overwhelm the more delicate fruit profile of citrus and grapefruit. Finished off with crisp acid. Would have liked a riper fruit profile from this good vintage. Perhaps picking a little later? — 6 days ago

Cabernet Merlot 2012

AU$36 strawberry scent, reddish and pinkish hue on colour. Strawberry flavour with medium tannin and an ash finish. Light to medium body with dry finish. Just not a fan of the ash finish. — 7 hours ago

Rebus Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Drinking well but 10+ years left. Good depth of blue@and black fruit with minty eucalypt twist. Still alot of tannin, but fully ripe and fine and powdery. Very good! — 9 days ago

How nice it is to move away from domestic wines, and relearn that there are equally outstanding examples on other continents - let me introduce you to exhibit A.
This is an Aussie benchmark displaying grapefruit, lemon and a hint of lanolin. Palate is squeaky clean, with a razor-sharp, flinty edge. Finishes long, with tension and weight. Kissed with light oak treatment, and pristine white fruits, this will run well beyond another 15 years. Brilliant.

Estate Chardonnay 2015

See previous notes. Put simply this is a stunning Chardonnay as its Show Record will attest, with at least 5 Trophies including Best Wine in Show at the Royal Hobart International Wine Show. A good combination of citrus and stone fruit with leesy complexity and incredible length of flavour. Demonstrates once again how great Margaret River is for Chardonnay. I’m glad I have 3 bottles left. A huge bargain at $30 per bottle. — 23 days ago
