Le Clos Guillot Chinon Cabernet Franc 2020

Opened yesterday. Quite bretty and reductive upon opening, but the funkiness has blown away now. The nose shows cola, dark cherry, green pepper bell, and black pepper. That cola note is something I usually get with natural wines from loire and beaujolais. The palate is yummy with a great acid drive, some superb cherry notes all along, some black pepper, some pomegranate touches, a bit of a drying layer in the rear that is quite peppery and a long fruity, joyfull finish that goes on for a while. It's not your typical extracted chinon. It's a modern, low intervention style that is delicious but needs time to settle. The anti-brett community out there might have a hard time with it 😅 but give it some time to breathe, and you will be rewarded.
Edit: it's even better 4 hours after. Delicious juice with some complex layers on top of it

Les Journaries Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2018

Love me a Côte Rôtie 😋. 5 hour decant had this singing with small berries and grill notes. Massive but still contained...my favourite type of wine. Will improve with time! — 2 months ago

And this isn’t any old Côte Rôtie but arguably THE traditionalist Côte Rôtie. One of my favorites in the Northern Rhône 😍

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Big & bold. Ripe dark fruit, spice, etc…Evolved yet still developing. Really loved the complex tertiary flavors starting to appear. One complaint: WHOPPING 14.7%! — 2 months ago

Honest, rustic Crozes though there are plenty other examples of N Rhône Syrah I’d choose over this, and at a better price point. — a month ago

Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

2014 vintage. Excellent fill and cork. Not decanted. Tasted after 1.25 hours open. The best red I’ve ever tasted from Paul Hobbs (and have had approx 125 samples over the years-including the high-end bleep). In a really admirable place currently between integration and balance, fruit and tannins. Will it improve? Doubtful. Can it hold steady for a spell? Definitely. Not exactly the biggest fan of what consists of To Kalon/Tokalon juice/interpretation these days vs the 60’s/70’s/80’s/earlyish 90’s but this was phenomenal. Medium body with respectable sed. A mullet wine…all business up front with a party on the back palate. Color me surprised and impressed. 11.8.24. — 2 months ago
