Paolo Bea

San Valentino Sangiovese Blend 2017

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. The 2017 San Valentino pours a slightly hazy, ruby color with medium+ viscosity and light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart, red fruit: sour Montmorency cherry, wood varnish, horse blanket, black licorice, old wood, and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and zippy. One of the more wild vintages of San Valentino I’ve ever had and this bottle wasn’t quite as good as the one I had a couple years back. Drink now and enjoy what nature gave to Paolo and Giampiero. — 5 months ago

Sandlands

Sonoma County Trousseau 2022

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2022 pours a pale, slightly hazy ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe red fruit: raspberry, strawberry, maraschino cherry, watermelon, rose water and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. This is impossibly easy to gulp down. Fresh, juicy and silky smooth. Drink now through 2032. — 3 months ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2006

Double decanted two nights before service. The 2006 pours a deep, slightly hazy garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with a mix of desiccated fruit and funky umami notes: bruised and desiccated strawberry, red rope licorice, nori, Cherry Dr. Pepper, cracked black pepper and leather. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is forever long and saline; it just hangs around forever. Initially, this came across as bit backward but it really gained power and character the more time it spent in the glass. Drink now with patience and through 2036. — 7 months ago

McHenry Vineyard

Estate Bottled Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir 2022

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of four days. Best on Day 3 and 4. The 2022 Estate pours a ruby color with a slightly hazy, transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart red fruit: tiny underripe woodland strawberries, dried green herbs, red flowers, mushrooms, sous bois, spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and super fresh. Better after 2027 through 2037. Only 100 cases made. — 4 months ago

Bevan Cellars

Dry Stack Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2022

An amazing Sauvignon Blanc with a great potential to age, enticing citrus notes with some powerful yet not overwhelming tropical fruit flavors. Great wood notes make this one very distinctive and expressive white from Sonoma. A bit hazy with some sediments which fall almost into a natural category of wines. However; it’s meant to improve as it ages. A bit not so common for a white from this region. Paired with seafood (salmon and tuna fish). Solid! — 9 months ago

Azienda Agricola La Torre

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2006

The 2006 La Torre pours a slightly hazy garnet color; browning with some rim variation. Medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous and showing the typical nature of the vintage; full, round, generous. The fruit is mostly desiccated in profile with leather, espresso, chocolate, earth and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium acid. The structure is very well integrated but keeping everything propped up. The finish is long, lovely. Drink now. I wouldn’t hold these past 2026. — a year ago
