Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2020

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90min. The 2020 pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of powerful ripe dark and blue fruits: Marionberries, figs, purple flowers, bacon fat, black olives, rocky minerals and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Young, but this is another lovely vintage of Chave Saint-Joseph. Give it time. Best after 2030 and drink through 2040+. — 9 months ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2017

$45 Big nose. Notes of blackberry, black cherry, rose petals and spice on the nose. Light in color. Full bodied. Bone dry. High acid. Medium-plus alcohol. High tannins with a strong chewy aftertaste. Notes of black cherry, cranberry, wet leaves, mushrooms, smoke, sweet tobacco and cola on the palate. This is a bone dry, DELICIOUS barabaresco. It verges on savory with its notes of wet forest floor while maintaining some beautiful fruit forward tones. I was told that this is a great example of a classic barbaresco nebbiolo, and if this is the case I am excited to drink more of this complex grape. — 3 years ago

I have wanted to do this producer side by side with Alban with well seasoned Tri-tip. Tonight is the night.

The crowd that leans California liked the French better.

I have always thought Alban in the new world mimicked Rostaing’s style.

Both phenomenal and I enjoyed both for slightly different climate & soil reasons.

These two producers do Syrah without the heavy smoked meats & bacon fat of say Cayuse.

Ronchi di Cialla

Colli Orientali del Friuli Schioppettino di Cialla 2016

A new tasting experience on several levels. Had never heard of or tasted this grape varietal, Schioppettino. I was looking for a lighter red off the menu at Settimo, Guy Grossi’s new Brisbane venture. Chosen purely because of its location in Friuli ie. cooler climate. The Somm was in the dark but the wine ended up being a revelation. Red cherry and cranberry - intense white pepper on nose and palate. Dried red florals. Love this style. Will be on the lookout for this Cuvée in the future. — 2 years ago

North east Italy is a hidden gem for wines.
Right up against the Dolmite Mountains, warm days, cool nights.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige really deliver.
Foradori, Franz Haas and Alois Lageder
are producers I look for.

Totally agree Jamie. I generally love cooler climate wines. In Italy the Valle d’Aosta is another example next to the Swiss Alps in the north west.
