Clos De Chênes

Francois Gaunoux

Le Clos des Chênes Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

From a bottle that had been opened earlier in the evening. The 2016 “La Clos des Chênes” pours a ruby color with a slightly watery rim and a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart red fruit: strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, sous bois, red flowers, some animale, mushrooms and fine warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with a medium+ finish. A Volnay of good character. Drink now through 2036.

It looks like I am trying to explain how much I love this wine. Or, how this wine is the reason people love Burgundy. Or, how the umami and fruit weave together without a touch of alcohol. Or, how … — 6 months ago

Domaine Potinet-Ampeau

Clos des Chênes Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2010

A majestic wine. Clear ruby in the glass with a wide brim and long legs. The nose is muted at first and this does require decanting but she does begin to reveal her mysteries after some time and air. Classic Volnay characteristics with wet earth and prunes. Violets and cherries with a touch of spice.

Drinking very well right now. Rustic yet elegant and so inviting. Nice tannins and complexity. A ton of energy and life here, she practically dances on the tongue. The beautiful funk is prevalent throughout. Wild strawberries and mushrooms on the palate initially. A bit of cedar and more cherries. Warm spice on the deliciously long finish. A beautiful Burgundy.

Nose: spicy lilacs. Lovely depth. Earth. I

Palate: sweet wild blackberries. Great length. Sexy. Very intense and dense. Delicious. Savory after an hour.

Better in 2-3 years but great today. Could be 9.5++ with more age.

Clos des Chênes Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2017

2017 vintage. Punchy and unconsolidated like a younger sibling. Plenty of moments of great height afoot. Medium-heavy body. Not as well knit as I'd like given the year/age and da money. Flighty here, tangents there. Still, tasting the wine, the pedigree and quality are evident. 01.04.25. — 5 months ago

Lovely.

Nose: terrific old burgundy cherry and library dust. As this opens classic lilacs.

Palate: sweet cherry. Earthy.

Les Chênes Carteaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2021

2021 vintage. Decanted and tasted after 45 minutes. Spicy, full nose with suggestions of power. Spices coming through in the flavors with this showing a medium-heavy body currently. Some great orange peel/zest in there as well. Intense and needing 3-5 years to loosen the death grip on your palate slightly. Can see this bumping up to a 9.4 in those next 3-5 years. 6.13.24. — a year ago
