Castle Hill Cider

Southold Farm + Cellar

Love Just Because Dolcetto

Bought at the winery in 2021 just as things started to lift for COVID, and we brought our dog Murph along. This has sat for a bit, with three sediment coating the inside of the bottle, and is starting to show some age, with a pale red, somewhat fig color, with amber notes and bricking to the edges. The nose is tart, with more hints of fig, iron/blood, and a little iodine, with some softer fig newton and dark plum notes to finish. The palate is still acidic, with a little smoke or charcoal, super ripe strawberries, star anise, grapefruit, butterscotch, some iodine or apple cider vinegar, grandma’s fruit chew gummies, some iron and age elements of amber and velvet present at the finish. South Hill Cider

Pomme Sur Lie 2018

For the style … dry, round, funky and Sherry-like w/ sotolon aromas. Incredible. Glad I took the gamble on this one. Akin to a mildly sour beer. — 2 years ago

Stony Hill

Napa Valley Chardonnay 1996

From mag

Pop and pour. A wondrous medium gold color. On the nose: Asian pear, oyster shells, lemon, floral, toasted nuts. Taste: great creamy-chalky mouthfeel with lemon, minerals, tart green apple, honey, cider. YUM! Still delicious at 27 years.

Duke's

Magpie Hill Reserve Shiraz 2018

Delectable this is the Magpie Hill Reserve Shiraz not offered in your choices. Dukes better known for their award winning Rieslings but the Porongorup district of Western Australia also produces lovely spicy peppery meaty Shiraz with notes of liquorice, herbs and charcuterie. This is the first of 6 bottles bought at the Cellar Door a few years ago. Contract winemaking by the talented Rob Diletti from neighbouring Castle Rock Estate. Great value at only $31 AUD for a wine of this quality. Had another bottle 37 weeks later on the 21st December 2024 with consistent notes. Still can’t believe what great value this Shiraz is. — a year ago

Tili

Riserva Assisi Sangiovese 2012

Dark cherry, stringent, hints of barnyard, rust and earth, complex Sangiovese…..yum! What else can I say. Assisi. What a wonderful place to visit. We walked up to the castle one day and discovered Aperol Spritz on a hot day. The next day we walked down the hill to this wonderful family winery Tili where we discovered this wine. — a year ago

Domaine du Clos du Fief

Tradition Juliénas Gamay 2019

Loved this dusty, earthy Beaujolais that drank like a Burgundy pinot. Narrow, dry but many layers that took you down this old twisty staircase in the old castle on the hill. — 2 years ago

Pearly Dewdrops Fruit Cider 2020

Plum jerkum!!! So much unfiltered stone fruit in here. Get some next time you’re in Red Hook! Reminds of Cab Franc, or maybe @Sam Shepard’s Cab Franc-inflected piss after a few glasses. — 3 years ago
