Castle Hill Cider

Duke's

Magpie Hill Reserve Shiraz 2018

Magpie Hill is the Reserve range from Dukes which is in the Porongurups, a sub district in the Great South of West Australia. The stony poor granitic soils giving concentrated wines. This producer possibly better known for its outstanding Rieslings has kicked a goal with this beautiful Shiraz. This has a very deep Ruby colour with a purple tinge. Smoky oak and mocha with ripe fruit - 14.5% ABV. Concentrated. Full bodied but not heavy- soft fine tannins. Made by the talented Rob Diletti who is their neighbour from his winery Castle Rock. Great value. — 20 days ago

@Somm David T Crazy good value as well at only $31 AUD. Bought this at the Cellar door in 2020. Haven’t seen it before or since. Their Rieslings have won numerous awards and Trophies.

@Bob McDonald, is the attached link (https://dukesvineyard.com/pages/story?srsltid=AfmBOoq1MO8PV0Op0ZhQMJQEsGmwvnf8h8d__4XMgKK3uY8XqdKG4KH9) for Duke’s Vineyard in the Porongurups the same winery? We visited in late 2023 and Ben and Sara had purchased the winery and vineyards in 2022, which is consistent with what I found above. I ALWAYS defer to you on things involving Australian wine, thus my question??

@Doug Powers Doug - only one Dukes winery in the Porongorups. That would be it.

Tili

Riserva Assisi Sangiovese 2012

Dark cherry, stringent, hints of barnyard, rust and earth, complex Sangiovese…..yum! What else can I say. Assisi. What a wonderful place to visit. We walked up to the castle one day and discovered Aperol Spritz on a hot day. The next day we walked down the hill to this wonderful family winery Tili where we discovered this wine. — 3 years ago

Love Just Because Dolcetto

Bought at the winery in 2021 just as things started to lift for COVID, and we brought our dog Murph along. This has sat for a bit, with three sediment coating the inside of the bottle, and is starting to show some age, with a pale red, somewhat fig color, with amber notes and bricking to the edges. The nose is tart, with more hints of fig, iron/blood, and a little iodine, with some softer fig newton and dark plum notes to finish. The palate is still acidic, with a little smoke or charcoal, super ripe strawberries, star anise, grapefruit, butterscotch, some iodine or apple cider vinegar, grandma’s fruit chew gummies, some iron and age elements of amber and velvet present at the finish. Domaine du Clos du Fief

Tradition Juliénas Gamay 2019

Loved this dusty, earthy Beaujolais that drank like a Burgundy pinot. Narrow, dry but many layers that took you down this old twisty staircase in the old castle on the hill. — 4 years ago

Pearly Dewdrops Fruit Cider 2020

Plum jerkum!!! So much unfiltered stone fruit in here. Get some next time you’re in Red Hook! Reminds of Cab Franc, or maybe @Sam Shepard’s Cab Franc-inflected piss after a few glasses. — 4 years ago

"S" Slatnik Venezia Giulia Chardonnay Tocai Friulano 2021

At first it reminded me of a Normandy craft cider. Then I poured some in my glass and the colour struck me. It's orangey and clearly turbid. Not your casual chardonnay Sunday evening pour. The nose is verrrryyy complex, pear, apple, honey, elderflower, white pepper, some slight apricot touch and some yeasty notes too (?). The palate is great too, good acid drive, pear and apple, honey, good width, soft mouthfeel that turns into a tannic wall in the rear that caresses the tongue before powering a multi-layered finish with honey, apricot, apple, pear, a savoury, salty touch. Wow this is wild. It's absolutely not the same wine nor the same tastes and varietals but this reminds to some extent of Joly's wines from la Coulée de Serrant. Extremist in the approach somehow. These guys will die on that hill with their ideas. — a year ago

The Joly reference is a good one.

@Jay Kline it struck me like an evidence, eventhough the wines have nothing in common 🤷🏻‍♂️

Stony Hill

Napa Valley Chardonnay 1996

From mag

Pop and pour. A wondrous medium gold color. On the nose: Asian pear, oyster shells, lemon, floral, toasted nuts. Taste: great creamy-chalky mouthfeel with lemon, minerals, tart green apple, honey, cider. YUM! Still delicious at 27 years.

Pomme Sur Lie 2018

For the style … dry, round, funky and Sherry-like w/ sotolon aromas. Incredible. Glad I took the gamble on this one. Akin to a mildly sour beer. — 4 years ago
