Bodegas Y Viñedos Santa Rosa S. A.

Rosa dell'Olmo

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

So here is the thing. Mr A. Scott is right. He did not say it in so many words - i guess he wants to clear out T.J.’s. But this wine which can be awful in some years is right on and for 15$ buy it by the case. The classic Barolo flavors one would expect + surprisingly anise on the nose and in the glass. Tons of tannins which could turn off for the usual crowd. But this is actually very very good for what it is. Unbeatable at this price. A miracle. — 3 months ago

@Pinotman /// Andreas Me and the lady have been crushing this as the daily drinker. Pop and pour. Absolutely, a miracle. Glad you enjoyed. Should hold steady for 5-7 years. After that, who knows?

Bodegas y Viñedos del Jalón

Las Pizarras Calatayud Viñas Viejas Garnacha 2008

Grenache based Red. Light garnet color. Intense aromas of tar, asphalt, rubber, and dark cherry. Pallet is still reasonably fresh with notes of cooked dark cherry, plum tobacco, roasted nuts and herbs. Hints of watermelon on the long and Smokey finish. Oak has integrated very nicely. Acidity is well balanced. This is an example of a wine that has improved with age. Thank You for sharing Keith S! — 2 years ago

Hendricks Wines

Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2014

David T
9.5

The Hendricks Pinot from the Doctors Vineyard in Santa Lucia. 11 barrels made. 22 months in French oak. I don’t know what everyone is used to but a Pinot 22 months in French oak is far more rare than common. This is my first look from the four bottles I’ve stored. Roughly eight years is the timing for first look.

This may be the best CA Pinot I have consistently yr over yr. The fruit is ripe, dry-ish, slightly tart; blackberries, dark cherries, black plum, black raspberries, plum, notes of blueberries, raspberries, dry cranberries & strawberries. Beautiful mid spices, nutmeg, cinnamon-cinnamon stick, vanillin, mid to dark berry cola, dry brush, dry clay, loamy, limestone volcanics, dark, dry soil, dark chocolate baking bar, crushed dry rocks, notes of not quite eucalyptus, tree bark w/ sap, fresh & slightly withering, dark, red, blue florals framed in subtle violets, near perfect acidity with a nicely structured, well balanced, velvety/silky, consistent wire to wire finish that lasts a minute and half. Simply amazing palate.

Good first look but better things ahead for my next bottle(s). Another 15 plus years of half drinking ahead.

Happy Labor Day weekend.

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu

Santa Cruz de Artazu Garnacha 2016

This is the Artazu Pasos de San Martin Navarra, a varietal Garnacha. A bit sleepy before it gets air, it gradually Benjamin Buttons and develops a terrifically pure nose of kirsch and raspberry ooze, along with crushed rock dust and sandalwood. In the mouth it’s got intense fruit, but is laser-focused and has excellent acids. Zero flab.
Just enough tannin to package it all. Really nice rendition of Grenache.

McHenry Vineyard

Estate Bottled Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir 2017

My first time trying the 2017 Estate, the latest release from this tiny yet remarkable producer way up on Bonny Doon Road. The wines from McHenry vineyard typically show their best with 5-10 years of age but I love to try them in their youth, you know...for science. I opened this bottle about three hours before dinner and allowed it to slow-ox in the cellar. At first, the aromas were predominately red fruited in profile; strawberries and spices…almost like a Christmas fruitcake. However, the profile evolved in the glass and with more air, this began to take on a darker fruit profile that I find to be more characteristic of McHenry’s wines. This is a beautifully perfumed wine. On the palate, this is very bright and full of precocious energy. Plums and red berries with baking spices and minerals. Tannins are medium at best but there is no shortage of acid, which is a hallmark for this estate, ensuring that the 2017’s will in all likelihood enjoy a long life. Excellent now and likely to be a stunner down the road. Only 100 cases were made. — 3 years ago
