Le Clos du Beau Père

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Red fruits with chocolate notes on the nose, and medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with sweet raspberries, cherries, red currants, coffee, earth, light wood, spices, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, light black pepper, herbs and black tea.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This 8 year old Merlot from Pomerol is drinking beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Elegant and fruity. Complex and entertaining.

Delicious right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. A great sipping wine, that will pair nicely with food too.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 22 months in all new French oak barrels.

15% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$60.

So brilliant. Nose of meyer lemon, seashells, that Chablis soul. Palate is round and rich yet taught and linear. Clearly needs air for the finish to fan out. But is sneakily persistent. So good and will get way better with air. Always does here. Wow with some air. This got elite quick. — 3 months ago

Fourchaume Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2014

Lovely aged 1er Cru Chablis, still quite fresh and lively, great fruit and complexity, lots of balancing acidity, I think the 2014 Cote de Lechet might be the top 2014 1er Cru, but this is darn good as well, long finish, “weird” perception on my palate, but I definitely perceived a subtle, yet distinct, “toasted coconut” note at one point (common in the beer pastry stout arena)!! — 14 days ago

I usually only taste coconut in aged Rioja.

@Dave, I agree, that’s why I noted it, I do like coconut — a LOT — in double pastry stout beers!!

That sounds good to me.

This is so good. Cooking now but more notes soon. It’s got this uncanny elegance on the palate plus this unreal concentration of sweet oak, minerals and fleshy fruit but backed up by ripping acids. Buttery Meursault but elevated beyond. — 2 months ago

Vaillons Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2016

Young, fresh, still quite primary fruit in this younger 1er Cru Vaillons, some tart lemon acidity, some fine minerality, a floral note as well, medium-long finish, needs a little more aging (2-4 years?) for my palate, but very, very nice!! — a month ago

Montmains Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2014

25 years younger than the 1989 Chapelot 1er Cru from Raveneau that we also opened, this 1er Cru is also brilliant, currently distinctly showing lemon and mineral/soil aromas and flavors, a touch of maturity but then the bracing acidity reminds me this definitely will evolve further, I was lucky to get a large slug of these 2014s, and they continue to impress, lingering finish, will cellar further!! This just might be an aged white wine I could even convince @Tom Casagrande of drinking at this age?!?!?! 🤔🤷😎 — a month ago

I have to admit I had a bunch of 14s from a range of producers that convinced me it was a classic old-school Chablis year. But they’re long gone!

Romeo Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Deep Ruby color with aromas of dark berry fruits, oak and floral notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry, cherry and plums with tobacco and herb spice. Firm grippy tannins, medium+ finish ending with fruit, oak, spice and mineral character. Ok but Juliet better! — 3 months ago
