Marcassin

Marcassin Vineyard Chardonnay 2008

2008 vintage. Yeah, some wackoid(s) gave this 100 points. Whatevs. Arrived at 70-72 degrees. Zero chill. Immediately plunged into an ice bath. Used a Durand to open but the über-dry cork just laughed at it and decided to pixelate into small, broken safety glass-styled fragments. Not the sign I was looking for. Here comes the funnel + screen + decanter to save the day. That screen needs a raise come review time. Put the decanter atop the ice bath with a protective serviette between and gave it another 5-6 mins in the chill. Color not quite yellow Chartreuse but pretty close. Tasted at approx 58-59 degrees. Like a trip to the confectionery + bakery. Whoa! Medium/medium-heavy body and this was popping. Splashes and suggestions of fruits, bread products and baking spices without an overriding, final boss. Phenomenal. Can’t give it a Wilt but it did not suck and should drink as such for at least another half-decade. Have had plenty of Marcassin whites and reds and this was the best of the lot. Transcendent. For all that…? 9.6. Soviet…er…Russian judge mode deployed. 3.6.25. — 4 months ago

Funky Gold Mosaic Sour Ale

That could be my most favorite “sour” ever. It is like in between a sour and a not sour. — 7 years ago

9.1

A touch cloudy lemon yellow in appearance with a medium white head. A bit stinky with a touch of citrus rind and hay. Smooth and crisp mouthfeel with some funkiness and stone fruits. Medium length finish. Perfect Saison for people new to the style. — 8 years ago

Grosset

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2012

Saturday lunch with friends. Aromas of white flowers and bath talcum powder. Amazingly youthful for a 9 year old Riesling - a long future ahead of at least another 10 to 15 years. Vibrant acidity will nurture this going forward. Considered by many to be Australia’s premium Riesling. A class act which will no doubt put on weight in the coming 10 years. Had another bottle 42 weeks later on 17th April 2022 with consistent notes. Very contained and youthful. Not a hint of kerosene. Leave the remaining 2? bottles for a couple of years at least. — 5 years ago

Saison de Lis

This pint can of Perennial Artisan Saison de Lis is amazing and just what I’ve wanted!!!

This is a Belgian style ale brewed with Chamomile flower and it’s amazing, picture the frothiness of the chamomile tea, and it’s robustness and gentle bitterness in a beer form... it’s very very very good!

Noel de Calabaza Special Ale 2011

This is a bottle that Vanessa was given by a former student who was apparently trying to clear out his cellar. Bottled on October 4, 2011, this is the best incarnation of Noel de Calabaza that I’ve ever had. Incredible balance, great secondary aromas, and a finish that lasts far longer than younger versions of this beer. Just goes to show how awesome JPs can become if you hide them away for a few years. — 8 years ago

Abraxas 2020

One of the best. Love the chili pepper flavor with dark and milk chocolates. Cinnamon and vanilla are secondary. The spice is what sets this apart from other beers in this style. Needs no pairing. — 5 years ago

La Rola du Kriek Sour Amber Ale 2016

A little disappointed with this incarnation (although it improved considerably with more time in the glass). Flavors were definitely muted. Might need some more time in bottle, but this was the weakest of the three JPs we opened tonight. — 8 years ago

Psychokinesis Dry-Hopped Sour Ale 2016

F'n nuts...like a lightly sour, fruit bomb went off in my mouth! Too good for a tulip glass, we're drinking this in Grand Cru Burgundy glasses. Nose is beautiful, hoppy and very fruity.

Dry-hopped with Mosaic, El Dorado and Hüll Melon hops and conditioned on white oak, never boiled or filtered. American wild ale, April 2016 bottle date.
