Best red wine I've had! Jeannie said the same. Sweeter, so easy to drink. But not so sweet that Ben doesn't like it. Outstanding. — 16 days ago

Domaine François Buffet

Champans Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2020

Lyle Fass
9.5

Stunning nose of terrific tiny berry fruit intensity. Tweed coat. Some herbals. Classic and so old school. Ripe and gritty. Kirsch. Beautiful fruit. Floral, expansive and so detailed. I could get lost in this nose. Huge fruit on the palate and wow on the mid palate. Sweet, concentrated and elegant but man this is young. Big tannins and super juicy with black cherry and terrific freshness but obviously needs some air to get more integrated. Stoney for Volnay. Huge structure like the other Buffet wines and the fruit core is stunning and they are toothsome but man is this young and backwards and I know air will help it as the finish is insanely backwards. Nose is getting more floral with air. As it airs it gets more elegant and complete. Tremendous fruit and grip. Like a squeegee of fruit. Black and dark. And so much.

This has mega potential and is as classic a Champans as i’ve ever had. 9.4 to 9.5 with air.

Calera Wine Company

de Villiers Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010

Legendary Loss

Calera founder Josh Jensen passed away earlier this month after a lifetime of achievements that included elevating American Pinot Noir on the world stage

Day 1
Served this with the Vinloq System
👃Bold, sexy, purple fruit floods from the glass endlessly
👅Spicy purple fruit, blood orange, sasafras, and licorice. A gentle tannic pull on the smoke tinged finish. Drinking well

Remaining wine was Slow Decanted in my refrigerator

DAY 10
👃Sweet, spicy, purple fruits with more vanilla, oak, vegetal, and tobacco notes than Day 1
👅Same sweet plummy fruit with tobacco and licorice. Fruit forward but balanced. Soft tannins and no heat

I did not have a preference for Day 1 or Day 10. There were more oak notes on both the nose and palate on Day 10. Two solid showings👍This is solidly in its drinking window & will be there for quite some time 🍷

Mayacamas Vineyards

Mt. Veeder Pinot Noir 2006

This bottle was generously provided by a friend, direct from his cellar. Let me start by stating that this wine made an impression. For one, I had never even seen a bottle of Mayacamas Pinot Noir (I think they only made a couple hundred cases a year). Second, at nearly 16 years old, I knew this was made by Bob Travers which meant we were probably in for a unique experience. I was not wrong. Popped and poured; no formal notes due to the setting. The wine poured a deep ruby with just a little bit of fine sediment which turned out to be the only thing that indicated any age on this bottle. Frankly, this came across…like it was a baby. Incredibly primary notes of tart red fruits, rhubarb, green herbs, olive, and dry earth. The other interesting characteristic was that it seemed to have a heavy influence of American oak. I seem to recall Bob Travers had some unusual cellar practices…but I don’t recall him using very much new oak…if at all. Anyway, this was a really unique wine and unlike any other Pinot Noir from Napa that I have ever had. The stated 15% alcohol seems almost laughable. If that’s true, then it’s remarkably controlled. If this bottle is a true indication of evolution, then expect a long life ahead. Drink now with a decant or enjoy through 2031. — 8 days ago

Les Noizons Pommard Pinot Noir 2020

9.5

What a deep stoney nose. Ripe black cherry fruit and a compote aspect. Dense, brooding and layered. Incredibly vivid fruit. A saline aspect as well. Gorgeous. Palate is stunning. Bright but dark fruits and amazing freshness. So sappy and pure and elegant. The elegance in the kid’s wines has really ramped up. Beautiful wispy yet velvety and sweet tannins but not too sweet. A raspberry coulis aspect and lip smacking freshness on the finish. I love the 2020’s here. Terrific inner mouth aromas and insane opulence. So juicy and energetic. The tannins are super high quality and the fruit is dark and opulent but just so perfect. Not overdone and owns its darkness and opulence. Silky and sweet and so long. A brilliant bottle. The fruit never quits on the finish even as it takes a detour for the minerals to express themselves. Almost a 9.6.

This has come alive after many hours. Nose is more integrated. Much more. Gorgeous raspberry and cherry. Wow. Palate is insanely juicy and fruit is more red. Sappy as all can be. Brilliant.

Correaux Vieilles Vignes Bourgogne Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2018

Pinot-Noir (66%) and gamay (34%) blend, both gourmet and sophisticated. The nose, marked by aging, evokes Burgundy by its toasted-cherry-vertical side, while the gamay would recall Beaujolais on strawberry-vegetable, jovial, floral and peppery notes. It's accessible, crunchy, with chew (not or little filtered) it pinote on a wide arotic range. The approach of a real friendly wine, with a solid final.

Ontario Baco Noir 2020

This may be something of a guilty pleasure for me, as it seems that I am going decidedly against the grain by loving this one so much. I don't care though; this wine is just so soft and silky with a bounty of dark fruit, spice, and a bit of smoke. Just terrific. 100% Baco Noir. 6/5/22. — 3 months ago

Jérome Coessens

Largillier Blanc de Noirs Brut Champagne Pinot Noir 2015

Talk about a singular expression of Pinot Noir. A pale gold coloring with effusive creaminess and a nice stream of very small bubbles. The aromas are a bit muted upon opening with just a bit of apple goodness to start the show. But let it sit for a while in a larger bowl and you’ll be rewarded. Warm cinnamon and crusty bread. Roasted nuts and blackberries all day long. There’s some fresh cherry and plenty salinity to boot.

Single vintage, single varietal, single vineyard. The hallmark of Jerome Coessens. 100% Pinot Noir from the lieu-dit of Largillier. The fruit hails from the plots that he has dubbed Fruit and Flower and that’s amazingly accurate. The amount of yellow fruit and floral notes are just ethereal in nature. The acidity borders on “racy” but instead settles on “zippy” which is just fine.

The attack is one that is quite pointed and full of finesse. It’s a very generous champagne that grows by leaps and bounds over time in the glass. An abundance of red and yellow fruits along with black pepper and dried herbs. Very fruity on the long finish with an added kick of spice. Singular and gorgeous.

Domaine Alexis de Benoist

La Sagesse du Jesune Homme Gamay Noir 2014

A solid Beaujolais-Village, bearing the stigma of the beautiful Beaujolais wines. Tiled ruby color, of a certain concentration. Superb open nose, between candied red fruits (cherry, strawberry), dried floral bouquet (Pink, peony, iris), white pepper, and notes of aerial evolution tending towards truffle, medley, nail polish. Close to a Burgundy in more airy and more floral. Fine and final body on vivacity. Beautiful nobility, superb for its price. Drink a little refreshed.
