Winzerhof Thörle

Saulheimer Kalkstein Riesling 2017

Lyle Fass
9.2

Wonderfully fragrant wine with lemon pith, apple, minerals galore and some herbs. Really in a terrific window. Palate has great density and is chock full of minerals and the acid is wonderful and vibrant. Lovely length and purity. Flavors are mostly lemon and apple on the palate. Nose has just the slightest hint of petrol. Really great stuff and drinking at its apogee. — 2 years ago

Henri Jayer

Échezéaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1998

Henri et Georges Jayer Echezeaux 1998. Vines owned by Henri’s brother Georges. 2X with this wine. Richer and fuller in body(than the Jayer Cros Parantoux 1998 drunk alongside) and became silkier, more savory, and more elegant with time in decanter. Arguably not at apogee, although drinking fantastically now. — 4 years ago

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Clairette Grenache Blanc 2005

Oh man what a special wine. Had to finish a great food and wine trip strong and this rare Rayas blanc from the fantastic list at Addison did not disappoint. Drinking at its apogee, it’s rich, wide open and firing on all cylinders with an attractive waxy texture and layered complexity.

Takes a turn to magic town after 2 hours open. It is highly focused with great power, structure, balanced acidity and tremendous depth. Torched pineapple, melon, melted butter, minerals and drizzled honey. There is superb concentration and midpalate intensity leading to a seamless transition to its exceptionally long finish that just won’t dissipate. Grateful to have snagged the last one! ❤️

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

The sleeper vintage. Simply just ready to go, holding nothing back as it wafts from the glass and the decanter with layers of cassis, cedar, violets and licorice. This is a wine of texture, as Margaux should be, and indeed its greatest attribute on this occasion. Liquid cashmere in the mouth with melting tannins, it’s sensual and elegant, caressing the palate with each sip, leading to its black truffle and mineral inflicted finale that keeps on going. Excellent showing tonight, and for my tastes drinking at its apogee. — 2 years ago

Domaine Henri Gouges

Les Chênes Carteaux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Dark rubi robe, nose of asian spices, black cherries and faded rose petals. Bold tannins but very mature and elegant as well. Medium length with good complexity. Its not at its apogee but drinking well. Lots of potential. We had it with a cote de boeuf and was a perfect match. This is really excellent stuff. — 2 years ago

La Rioja Alta

Gran Reserva 890 Rioja Tempranillo Blend 1981

Beautiful garnet color with still some freshness. Mind blowing nose. If we didn’t catch this wine at it’s apogee I can’t imagine how much better I can get but fuck it was good — 4 years ago

Weingut Keller

G-Max Rheinhessen Riesling 2014

A great, great G-Max! Doesn’t quite have the breadth and approachability of the 17’ at this stage, but the purity and precision is certainly on par, or perhaps better. The 14’ G-Max was the most filigreed in our little vertical for me - a more elegant iteration where flowers and herbs hit you first, before zesty fruits come through preceding the riper stone fruits; and where intense minerality and deep-cutting acidity take centre stage. This was a dancer that gently floats across the stage, yet her presence is undeniable… the audience enchanted by her fine and complex movements. She’s yet to hit the apogee in the performance yet, but burst of intense manoeuvres preview what is to come. I cannot wait! — 2 years ago

@Aaron Tan It's just amazing to have access to these in general. I do hope, one day, to be able to acquire or taste one.

Boeckel

Wiebelsberg Riesling 2016

For me (though perhaps not for others) this is at its apogee. Rich nose has petrol and deep, bitter honey, dried apples and apricot. Some botrytis for sure. Dry, rich, and, to my taste, very slightly oxidative, nice acids and a long, earthy finish that shows honeyed fruit, liquid minerals, and even a bit of mushroom. — 2 years ago

Domaine du Pegau

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2004

Stunning nose of brambly dark red fruit and black tea. Bacon fat and scorched clay on the entry followed by a broad beam of melted tannins and fig, iron, Provençal spices and lavender. 45+ second finish. Outstanding, another great bottle though now at its apogee (but likely to stick around and turn to burgundy over time). — 4 years ago
