Today was my annual hosting of the Wednesday Wine Committee. There was 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds and 1 dessert, all provided by me. Tasted blind, as always.
Copying my note from the ‘07 vintage as the wines are near identical. I will say that I didn’t get as much yeast out of the ‘09 as I did the ‘07, but it’s hard to know if it was simply due to age. I’ll hold back a bottle or two for a few years and revisit then.
Next to Ultramarine and the Reserve Schramsberg Sparklers, this is one of the best domestic Sparklers I’ve had, especially at the price ($50). Nose was grilled honeycomb, baked yeast and a small bit of limestone. Extremely creamy on the front palate...bubbles were so incredibly tiny. Multiple bubble strings. Wonderful lemon bread palate, with a crisp, chalky finish highlighted by grilled pineapple. There seemed to be more green apple notes here compared to the ‘07 vintage, but may be due to youth. This is an excellent US version of champagne. — 8 days ago
Props to Wine Impressions for pointing this one out. Beautiful wine that could fool you into believing it is a finer example of burgundy. The ten years age has treated this well. Outstanding wine with developed stone and tropical fruits balanced by medium plus acidity and well integrated with butterscotch and hazelnut from French oak. medium plus finish. Fruit is a little upstaged by secondary but good integration makes it work. At $27, one of the best QPR I’ve come across. — 6 days ago
Ripe, rich, rearing to go with Cajun seafood in New Orleans. Dark/black fruited goodness on a medium-weight mouthfeel... silky smooth with no noticeable tannins, but laudable acid/fruit balance. Reminds me of just how great Anderson Valley Pinots are with a hint of age. Great with blackened anything! — 6 days ago
The first bottle I had seemed a bit flabby it this couldn’t be further from that. Tightly wound but explosive nose with strawberries, raspberries and wild berries framed by dusty earth, fresh leather, sandalwood and dried spices along with a grilled meat note. Palate is energetic and cooked with a cayenne note throughout and still a good bit of juiciness. Finishes with a very spicy note as well with completely intact structure and good acidity. It’s compact and giving. The last bottle felt end-of-life. This one feels like a beginning... — 10 hours ago
Pale yellow , excellent clarity. Litchi and spice notes in nose. Off dry to dry, good acidity, floral, spice and wood flavors, mild lemon and spice finish, aftertaste. Well made, as one would expect from this producer. Slightly bitter Riesling varietal character is there, but nuanced expression five years plus after harvest; allow 90 minutes after opening for this to emerge. — 20 days ago
Pale yellow with a golden tinge, excellent clarity. Honeysuckle note in nose. Muscat, Asian pear and wood-spice flavors, good acidity, dry. Slight fine-grained skin tannin astringency, mild seed bitterness. Litchi, honey and citrus flavors with length and a mineral finish. So good... — 6 days ago
