S.C. Pannell

Adelaide HIlls Syrah 2013

The 2014 Jimmy Watson Trophy winner. 30% whole bunch ferment; 2-3% Viognier co-fermented. The winemaker, Steve Pannell is highly awarded in Australia and made the following comment, “Wonderful now but I’ll be keeping a few bottles for a celebration in 2026 and suggest you do the same. “ Written on 17/11/23. This wine was intense in flavour without being too big. Black plum, spice and liquorice. Have the last one in 2030+ if I have the willpower. — 4 days ago

Estate Grown Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2021

One of my go-to California Chards. All the hallmarks I like. Oak notes of vanilla, butterscotch, and brioche toast, but balanced by high acid and minerality. The best of both worlds. — 5 months ago

Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2016

We had the battle of the Shiraz at our family gathering over Christmas. A Shiraz from South Australia and South Africa. Both 2016. This Shiraz, despite from the Adelaide Hills where I think it is a little cooler, was very rich, very bold and broad and a slight jammy note on the edge perhaps. People liked it, but all the votes when for the Shiraz of Cederberg from South Africa. Fun!!! — 9 months ago

Beauregard Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay

Jasmine, quince paste, spiced pear, lemon curd, pineapple sweetness, punchy. Touch of lemon pith at end, but tons of juicy acid. Creamy / lactic. Chalky minerals. Layered, delicious, weighty.

Fossati La Morra Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

This wine pours a somewhat clear ruby red. It has a nice nose. The fruit is restrained. And after it’s been open for a little bit, the tannins really come through. This is an excellent wine that I got at Costco for $48. I would definitely re-buy it. It went well, although not a perfect match with the seafood linguine I had for my birthday at Mange Bene restaurant. #barolowine #italianwines #piedmontwines #nebbioli #costcowines — 6 months ago

Hahndorf Hill Winery

GRU Adelaide Hills Grüner Veltliner 2019

Served blind by me at Sue Bell’s dinner party with Bruce Redman. After being tricked by Sue all week with blind tastings at the winery I was determined to get square. She was up to the task getting just the state wrong. Once I said Adelaide Hills she knew it was a Gruner. Hahndorf Hill are acknowledged as the best producers of Gruner in Australia. Taking its lead from the GV’s of Austria’s Kamptal region. Grapefruit, Citrus and stone fruit. A multi award winner on the Australian Show circuit. A gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards London 2020. — 5 years ago

@Simon Gilligan Quite close to a cellar door visit from where you live. Worth the trip to taste all their GVs. I was a bit disappointed with their Blaufrankisch but I don’t have much experience with this varietal.

Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2023

2023 vintage. FLB jetsam. Decanted and tasted after 30 minutes and 1 hour. Medium/medium-heavy body. Dark color. Round impressions. Pleasant berry escapades on the back end with spritzes of rhubarb. This was waay too young and could definitely use 2-3 years to dump the baby fat and reapply. Nicely made. Just needs more time to reveal all the wonders within. 6.26.26. — 3 months ago
