Kumeu River

Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

Medium lemon in colour. An intriguing classy nose showing funky leesy notes, nectarine, cashew nut, flint and gunsmoke - many nuances. Palate staining citric intensity. One of the world’s great new world Chardonnays - no exaggeration. Has become an annual purchase for me. Postscript:: Similar notes to the 2010 vintage 193 weeks ago. This year I bought the “Hunting Hill” and “Coddington” Cuvées for the first time. Will be interesting to see the differences. — a day ago

@Jan A That’s good Jan. I never dreamt the distribution would be as wide as this.

I have not seen their Pinots here, but would love to taste those at some point. I’m guessing they are worth a try.

@Greg Gosselin I’ve only had their Hunting Hill Pinot 194 weeks ago in Wellington at the NZ Pinot Celebration and it was very good. Notes here on Delectable but I think the Chardonnay remains Star of the Show.

Kumeu River

Coddington Chardonnay 2016

Light gold color. Big nose dominated by camomile and butter with a little melon. Wine was actually better colder versus on the warmer side. On the palate I got a lot of sugar and hence too much sweetness for me. Very little acidity. Too sweet for me. — 2 months ago

More French than Californian. Which I prefer. I would try this one again. — 3 months ago

I expected more from a #singlevineyard release from #kumeu and that has been touted by the likes of #jancisrobinson must be an #mw thing. Too expensive for what it delivered. Better off with the #estate wines of Kumeu. #newzealand #pinotnoir — 24 days ago

Kumeu River

Rays Road Estate Bottled Chardonnay

Beautifully made, textbook Chardonnay. Citrus and smoky floral notes. Perfect balance - steely precision but also generous. You would pick this as top 1er Cru Chablis or a lean Puligny. Very long lemon curd aftertaste. Up there with the original single vineyard offerings from Kumeu. Perhaps less individual but 50% less money and drinking superbly now. This will increase in price!! — 2 months ago

Even though the nose promises more than it delivers, the mouth is still very enjoyable.

Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2018

Fruit driven with peach and ripe pear aromas. Great acidity and after taste. — a month ago

Kumeu Village

Chardonnay 2018

Every now & then it’s good to try something non European.
This is a pleasant surprise - crisp & clean as a whistle with pure fruit and a nice tension. A touch of matchstick reduction adds to the charm. A lovely wine.

Dry River

Martinborough Chardonnay 2014

Pale to mid Lemon in colour. A dried pear character - also notes of quince. Opened this on Sunday and by Monday night there were tropical fruit notes as in mango on nose and palate. Honeyed and very flavoursome. Medium minus acid; medium plus intensity. Love these New Zealand Chardonnays. They are good from north of Auckland (Kumeu River) to Central Otago in the South Island. This one is from Martinborough a few hours north of Wellington. — 3 months ago
