I Cacciagalli

Bodegas Faustino

Faustino Rioja Gran Reserva I 2006

A beautiful color of ruby with a wide brick rim.

Light and gentle nose of blueberries, black cherries, black currants, light oak, Indian spices, cinnamon, light licorice, coffee, light vinaigrette, curry and black pepper.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, strawberries, red currants, light cedar, vegetables, coffee, tobacco leaf, herbs, black tea, peppercorn, vinaigrette and earth.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 14 year old is drinking very nicely now, although not from the best vintage.

Needs 2 hours to open up properly and show the beautiful nose, but pretty good right out of the bottle too.

This Gran Reserva is always enjoyable. A nice wine to have by itself or with food, and especially great with fatty cheeses.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

Kapitel I Red Blend 2015

Very nice with some chill on it. Fresh, fizzy on the palate with plenty of acidity and and some red fruit. Faint aromatics (with the chill) that became stronger unripe fruit as it warmed. No need for multiples but a nice change of pace. — 19 days ago

I Veroni

Riserva Chianti Rùfina Sangiovese 2014

This is a very good Chianti, but I have to admit: stylistically, and for my purposes (matching wine with the food I and my wife cook), I generally like the regular, fresher Chiantis over the darker, more wooded Riservas and the new Gran Selecciones. But this is a very well made Riserva. Dark, slightly sour but ripe cherry fruit intermingled with balsamic. Some gravelly notes. Good intensity and balance in the mouth, but focusing on darker, leathery notes more than fruit. Some puckery tannin comes out at the end. — 14 days ago

I Custodi

Antè Etna DOC White Blend 2017

First time taking a bottle of the I custodi Bianco home. First thing that I noticed was the mouth feel, this is a “weighty” white. Substance and complexity. Paired well with paella. — 4 days ago

Raventos i Blanc

de Nit Rosé Cava Blend

Pomelo, white flowers, chalk and a touch of biscuity goodness. As another reviewer noted, this cava has a classic elegance that’s on par with what you’d expect from the big champagne houses. No complaints here that it’s half the price. — 16 days ago

I Favati

Terrantica Etichetta Bianca Greco di Tufo 2012

Totally unique and delicious. Nose of diesel, citrus, dried flowers, straw, caramel, bee pollen. Palate is oxidative with a long savory acid streak. A little reminiscent of aged chenin but leaner, saltier and higher acid. — 17 days ago

I am glad you enjoyed a good greco di tufo. It is a very hard variety to appreciate especially with some age. I love one called Tornante from Vadiaperti and there are many more, I Favati is always among the best even though I must admit I've never tried it with 8 years on the shoulders. Well done mate!

Martinet Bru Priorat Garnatxa Syrah 2016

Still a baby, but already solid, huge, grippy, powerful and assertive Priorat.
Garnacha/Syrah, fermented in cement tanks with wild yeasts with daily oxygenation. Macerated 10-15 days. Aged in 4000 L wooden vats, 300 L barrels, clay jars & demijohns for 18 months.

Dark inky garnet, scarlet rim.
Intense, invigorating & refined nose of black earth, tar, smoke, pome jam, raspberry pie, charred pine cone, crushed pepper, peppermint, cherry seed, bone fire, caramel, mulberry jam, tobacco, box of matches, mushrooms, pu er tea, licorice, ink, rosemary, volcanic minerals.
Impressive and massive palate. Very full body (14.5%), vivid acidity, grained tannins. Chokeberry, hibiscus, red currant skins, basil, lilac broth, black gooseberry, unripe saskatoon, earth, cigar, roasted cacao beans, lavender, savory, espresso flavors.
Saturated lasting finish of cedar, saskatoon, chokeberry, coffee and licorice.
Paired rib-eye steak finely.
